Minecraft is full of mobs. Some are violent, others are neutral, but most have a unique purpose.
Llamas are one such mob that stand out from the rest. While they look like Horses, they act entirely differently. While they seem inoffensive, they have an attack that you don’t want to activate. If you’re curious about Llamas and have questions like “what do Llamas eat in Minecraft?” this guide has you covered.
What Are Llamas in Minecraft?
Llamas are neutral mobs you can use to transport items around your Minecraft world.
To use a Llama in Minecraft, you must tame them by riding them repeatedly. To ride a Llama, walk up to it and right-click it. Press Shift to get off it, and do this again and again until it exhibits hearts.
Once tamed, you can give it a Chest by right-clicking the tamed Llama while holding one. From there, you can get into the Chest by right-clicking on the tamed Llama while sneaking.
What’s interesting about Llamas is their strength stat. This is a randomized stat that affects how much they can hold when you give them a Chest. Ideally, you’d want a level 5 strength Llama so it can hold the most items.
You can see the Tamed Llamas’ extended inventory at the top.
Unfortunately, even after you Tame Llamas, you cannot control their movement even while riding them. They reject a Saddle, after all. Instead, you can control them via Lead.
Even better, if you lead one Llama around, up to nine other Llamas will follow, meaning you can have a caravan of up to ten Llamas.
You can also give a Llama a piece of Carpet, which will give it a unique patterned rug on its back. There is a unique pattern for every color of Carpet.
While Llamas are neutral mobs, they will spit at you if you attack one. They’re also automatically hostile towards untamed Wolves, and stronger Llamas even have a chance to scare Wolves off.
What Do Llamas Eat In Minecraft?
Now, if you want to gather more Llamas, you can breed them by feeding them a Hay Bale.
How To Make A Hay Bale
A Hay Bale is technically a storage block, similar to a Chest, and is used to feed Horses and Llamas.
To create a Hay Bale, simply organize nine pieces of Wheat as follows in a Crafting Table:
If you need to gather Wheat before you make any Hay Bales, here’s how:
How To Gather Wheat
To gather Wheat, you first need to find Seeds. You can find Seeds by breaking the small grass that grows in most biomes.
Once you’ve acquired Seeds, you must plant them on tilled soil by using a Hoe. To craft a Hoe, combine 3 Sticks with 2 item materials, such as Iron Ingots, via Crafting Table:
Use the Hoe to till some grass, and make sure it’s near water. Then, plant your Seeds by right-clicking the soil.
Eventually, these Seeds will grow into Wheat. Harvest the Wheat, and organize it in a Crafting Table as shown previously to make a Hay Bale.
After you feed a Llama a Hay Bale, it will go into breeding mode. You can tell it’s in breeding mode as hearts will emerge.
Get two Llamas into breeding mode near each other, and they will give birth to a baby Llama. Note that you can only breed Llamas that are tamed. An untamed Llama will not go into breeding mode.
Baby Llama
The baby Llama will take the color from one of its parents, and its strength will generate at random. However, the stronger the two Llamas that bred the baby, the higher the chance the baby Llama will be stronger than its parents. The same goes for the baby Llama’s health.
Baby Llamas in Minecraft take about 20 minutes to grow up. However, you can feed them Wheat or Hay Bales to increase that speed.
Where To Find Tamed Llamas
While you’re unlikely to find tamed Llamas out in the wild, there are a few places you can look to find untamed ones.
Untamed Llamas spawn in the Savanna biomes and their variants in herds of 4 and spawn in Windswept biomes in herds of 4 to 6. 10% of the time, a Llama spawn is a baby Llama.
You can also acquire tame Llamas from Wandering Traders… if you defeat the Wandering Trader. There’s no way to gather the Llamas otherwise. Even after defeating Wandering Traders, you must tame their Llamas.
The Llamas that spawn with a Wandering Trader are technically a different variant. They’re called the Trader Llamas, and these Llamas will protect their Wandering Trader if attacked by players or enemy mobs.
If you defeat a Llama, it may drop Leather as well as any Carpet it’s wearing. Also, keep in mind that a defeated Llama will drop any items in its Chest — important to consider while roaming around.
