Minecraft is full of adventures and thrilling moments; however, one of the most frustrating moments in the game is when you die and lose all the items in your inventory. Upon dying, there’s a 5-minute timeframe for you to retrieve your items before they despawn forever. Luckily, the game provides a solution for this problem with the Keep Inventory Command. This guide will explain what Keep Inventory is, how to enable it, and much more.
What is the Keep Inventory Command?
The Keep Inventory command essentially does what the name implies. It is a feature that allows players to keep the items in their inventory even after dying. No matter where or how many times you die, you will always respawn with every item you had before you died, including any armor you were wearing. This can be particularly helpful in challenging situations such as falling out of the world in the End or drowning in lava.
How to Enable Keep Inventory

Whether you’re playing on Bedrock or Java edition, enabling Keep Inventory is very straightforward and can be done in just a few steps. Though keep in mind that using this command will require cheats to be enabled in your world. Here is how you can enable it:

Open Your World to Cheats

Java Edition
Let’s first begin with Java Edition. If you’re starting a new world, make sure to enable cheats from the game setting menu. If you already have an existing world, you can enable cheats by opening the pause menu and selecting Open to LAN, then toggling Allow Cheats to ON, and finally clicking Start LAN World. This will allow you to input commands for that session.

Open the Chat Window

The next step is to open the chat window. On PC, press the T Key on your keyboard to open the chat. To enable Keep Inventory, type the following command into the chat:
/gamerule keepInventory true
After typing the command, press Enter. If successful, you should receive a confirmation message stating that the game rule has been updated.
Bedrock Edition
For Bedrock players, enabling Keep Inventory is way easier. This can be done by simply toggling the option in Settings.
Start by launching Minecraft and enter your world of choice. Then open the Settings menu and navigate to the Game category, scroll down until you see the Cheats section, and enable the Activate Cheats option.

Further down, you will see the Keep Inventory option. Enable this as well.

If done correctly, you should not lose any items upon dying in your Minecraft world.
Benefits of Using Keep Inventory
The Keep Inventory command offers a variety of benefits for both new and experienced players. Exploring the world can be done freely without the fear of losing your valuable items and equipment. Additionally, building often involves transporting large quantities of materials. If you accidentally fall or get ambushed by a creeper, you could lose hours of gathering and building progress. Keep Inventory prevents this from happening, letting you focus on your creative projects without interruption.
When Not to Use Keep Inventory
While Keep Inventory can greatly enhance your Minecraft experience, it’s not for everyone. Players who like to be challenged by the difficulty of Minecraft might find that this feature makes the game too easy. Losing items is a natural part of Minecraft’s survival experience and it adds stakes to every adventure.
At the end of the day, it’s all about the personal preference of the player.
