This article will cover everything related to Minecraft shaders. This includes downloading shaders, how to install shaders, and more.
Note: This article involves downloading software from a third party. If you are not comfortable downloading third-party software, we do not recommend you go through this process.
What Are Minecraft Shaders?
Minecraft shaders adjust the game’s lighting and shadows to enhance its looks. Many players install hyper-realistic Minecraft shaders to see how lifelike the game can be.
However, shaders are only available in Minecraft: Java Edition. Users playing Minecraft: Bedrock Edition can adjust their visuals through resource packs and texture packs.
To start using Minecraft shaders, you must first download Optifine.
How To Install Optifine
Optifine is an optimization mod that enables Minecraft to run faster and provides a variety of optimizations for visual customization, such as support for Minecraft shaders.
1. Download Optifine
Navigate to Optifine.net, click the Downloads tab, and select Download next to the software’s latest version.
The website will show an ad, select Skip, and it will take you to the Download page. Click Download.
Save the file wherever you’d like. Once downloaded, it should be called something like OptiFine_1.20.4_HD_U_I7.jar, depending on the version.
2. Installing Optifine
Navigate to the file, right-click it, and select Open.
A pop-up will appear. The software should have automatically found your Minecraft Launcher folder. If the displayed folder is wrong, redirect the software to your Minecraft Launcher folder. Once done, select Install.
Once complete, you’ll receive a pop-up reading: Optifine successfully installed. To test this, we can check the Minecraft Launcher.
How To Check If Optifine Installed
1. Open the Minecraft Launcher
Open the Minecraft Launcher and navigate to Minecraft: Java Edition using the left sidebar.
Select the Latest release tab on the Launcher’s left side. If Optifine is installed correctly, there will be an Optifine version of Minecraft.
Note: If the Optifine installer is having issues, you may have the wrong Minecraft: Java Edition version. To get around this, click the Installations tab on Minecraft: Java Edition’s Launcher page. Select New Installation, and find the version number that matches Optifine’s. Click create, and launch that version of the game once. Then, try the Optifine installer again.
Launching Optifine in Minecraft
1. Select Optifine in the latest release tab
Navigate to the latest release tab, and make sure to select the Optifine release.
2. Launch Minecraft: Java Edition
Once you’ve selected the proper version, click Play.
3. Accept the warning
A warning will appear, asking if you’re okay with playing a modified version of Java Edition. If that’s okay, check the box next to I understand the risks. Don’t warn me again about this installation and click Play.
The game will install and then launch.
4. Select Options
At the main menu, select Options.
5. Select Video Settings
Navigate to Video Settings.
6. Check the version number
If the Optifine mod was installed correctly, you’ll see a version number on the bottom left. You’ll also see additional options like Shaders, Details, Animations, and more.
Install Minecraft shaders through Optifine
Now that Optifine is properly installed, it’s time to install shaders with Optifine.
To start, let’s find and download some shaders.
1. Find shaders online
There are all sorts of Minecraft shaders to install, including Continuum Shaders or Naelego’s Cel Shaders. You can choose to install one at a time or many at once. Fortunately, Optifine allows you to switch between them at will.
This guide will cover installing Sonic Ether’s Unbelievable Shaders.
2. Navigate to Sonic Ether’s website
Head to sonicether.com and select Downloads via the drop-down menu on the top right.
3. Pick a version to download
There are multiple versions to select. This guide will be picking the SEUS PTGI HRR Test 2.1 version. When you’ve found a version you’d like to install, click Download.
4. Download the shader pack
You’ll be taken to a download page on Patreon. Scroll down and select SEUS PTGI HRR TEST 2.1.zip. Save the file wherever you’d like, though we recommend placing it in the Optifine folder for easy access.
Note: You do not need to unzip the folder.
5. Navigate to the shaders option in Minecraft
To install the shaders, open Minecraft: Java Edition and navigate to the Video Settings tab from before. From there, select Shaders.
6. Open the Shaders folder
You’ll see a selection of options and a list where shader names will appear once installed. Select the Shaders Folder tab on the bottom left.
7. Drag the shader pack to the folder
Drag the zipped shader pack, SEUS PTGI HRR TEST 2.1.zip, to the Shaders Folder you opened in the previous step.
8. Select the shader
The shader should immediately appear in the list. Select it.
A loading screen will appear for a brief moment. Then, you’ll return to the shader packs list. Click Done.
Now, you can launch your Minecraft world, and the shaders should be active. You can also find other Minecraft shader packs via the arrow icon next to the Shaders Folder button. Keep in mind that this will take you to a website with third-party links to install shaders.

Hello!
I wish to point out that I am blocked from downloading OptiFine from anywhere. It seems as if Opera has blocked every single access point, making it a literal nightmare. Please help me find a solution for it. It’s otherwise a fraud that should not be advertised.
John Kirkpatrick says
Hi Karl – I’ve never heard of that. Perhaps try Google Chrome or FireFox just once to download the file? We don’t have much experience with Opera unfortunately.
