While Minecraft has had many updates since its full release back in 2011, few of the items added hold the importance of Diamonds.

This guide will cover everything you need to know about how to find Diamonds in Minecraft, including where to find Diamonds, which coordinate levels are the best to find them, and what you can do after you find Diamonds.

What Are Diamonds In Minecraft?

Diamonds are one of the rarest materials in Minecraft — at least when it comes to those you can find naturally.

These light-blue treasures are often a primary goal for any Minecraft player, as they’re a crucial component of the game’s rarest tools and armor.

For example, a Pickaxe made from Diamond Ore mines blocks faster than most of the materials before, such as Iron or Stone.

However, a Gold Pickaxe will mine faster than a Diamond Pickaxe, but the Golden one will break after only 33 blocks. A Diamond Pickaxe will last for 1,562 blocks, making it the more ideal option in most cases.

Of course, the most powerful Pickaxe is a Netherite Pickaxe, but getting this material takes a long time. This is why we’re focusing on finding Diamonds.

How To Find Diamonds In Minecraft

Let’s get something out of the way immediately. You won’t find Diamond Ore above ground.

You may occasionally find Diamonds while exploring a village, such as in Chests, but these will be few and far between.

To go out and find Diamond Ore and have a chance at acquiring groups of Diamonds at once, you’ll need to venture underground.

More specifically, you must head to coordinate level 15 or lower on the Y-axis. You will never find Diamonds at a level higher than 15, so keep that in mind during your Diamond-seeking experience.

To check your coordinate position, press F3 and examine the Y part of the XYZ section in the overlay.

There are two ways you can get to Y level 15.

Strip Mining

If you have a few pickaxes, you can start digging downward while creating a staircase, getting all the way down to Y level 15. We recommend mining a staircase rather than digging down in a straight line, as you can easily fall into Lava by doing that.

Once you finally get down to Y level 15, it’s best to head even lower, maybe to -15 or lower, to find Diamonds quickly.

Now, let’s get into one of the most efficient methods of searching for Diamonds: strip mining.

Strip mining requires you to dig straight through a wall, mining Stone in a path that’s one block wide and two blocks high. Feel free to mine this way as long as you’d like, as you’ll have a decent chance of discovering Diamonds by doing so.

Since you probably don’t have Diamond Tools at this point, it’s best to bring some Iron Pickaxes.

If you get bored of one strip, you can try another via branch mining. In Branch Mining, you move three blocks away from the strip you started to create a new strip and begin all over again.

The idea is that you’re covering a ton of ground in the most efficient way possible, searching for Diamonds hidden deep in the world. Keep going until you have as many Diamonds as you’d like.

Exploring Caves

Exploring caves is the other way to find Diamonds quickly in Minecraft. This is the more fun way to do it, as strip mining can get a bit tedious.

Caving involves running through pre-generated spaces full of cool sights like massive pillars, dangers like Lava or monsters, and, potentially, a whole lot of Diamonds among other resources.

Finding a cave is pretty easy. All you need to do is explore above ground until you find a hole in the ground.

Follow the hole to a massive cave structure and delve deeper than the Y level 15 minimum. From there, you’re bound to see Diamond Ore sticking out in random areas.

Just make sure to wear some armor to protect yourself. You don’t want your efforts to go to waste. Eventually, you’ll be able to make Diamond armor, keeping yourself even safer than ever before.

Enchanting A Diamond Pickaxe

Once you’ve acquired enough Diamond to make a Diamond Pickaxe, consider enchanting it with an Enchanting Table to speed up your mining process.

To enchant your Pickaxe, you need Lapis Lazuli and some experience points, as well as the tool itself.

You’ll also want to surround the Enchanting Table with Bookshelves for higher-level enchantments. A fully leveled Enchanting Table will look like this:

Place the Diamond pick on the table alongside up to 64 Lapis from here. You can pick from a randomized set of enchantments here, each costing a different amount of experience.

You can guess which enchantment you’re likely to get by hovering over it but remember that higher-level selections may grant more than one enchantment.

An enchanted pickaxe will list its enchantments when you hover over it.
