In Minecraft, players often have to engage in close combat, often using axes and swords to fight off mobs and players. But what about when it comes to long-range battles? From sneaking up on pillager outposts to defending your village from raids, long-range weapons such as the Minecraft Bow come in handy.
The Bow has been a staple in the game ever since Minecraft’s early days. At the same time, however, it’s an overlooked weapon. With the right enchantments and a bit of practice, you can become formidable on the battlefield with it.
Thinking of picking up the Bow as a new weapon to master in Minecraft? You’ve come to the right place as this guide covers what you need to know about the Bow and its enchantments.
What is a Minecraft bow?
Simply a long-ranged weapon that shoots arrows, the Minecraft Bow can take down enemies from a distance. It’s crafted from simple materials beginners encounter: Sticks, string, and arrows. You can also find it from Skeleton Drops. In line with that, the bow also has a unique mechanic in its gameplay use. Players have to draw back the bow for the arrow to load and release the click for the arrow to shoot.

The bow’s effectiveness is dependent on how long the player draws the bow itself. This makes timing quite crucial when using this weapon. But with the right enchantments, the bow can be enhanced to have increased power and damage. With that in mind, the Minecraft bow can be quite a strategic tool to use in both single-player and multiplayer gameplay.

Before getting into the Bow enchantments, however, you should know first how to make an Enchanted Bow. There are two main ways you can make an Enchanted Bow in-game.
How do I make an Enchanted Bow?
Enchantments enhance gameplay for players with the weapons they choose to enchant. Usually, enchanting requires experience orbs and Lapis Lazuli. So, it’s important to gather a lot of those aforementioned things especially if you plan to enchant your bow with high stats.
With an Anvil
Enchanting any tool or weapon with an Anvil is much easier. It requires fewer resources and you can directly combine and build the enchantments you want for your bow. But do keep in mind that you’ll need an Anvil, Enchanted Book, Experience, and your bow.
First, you must craft an Anvil which requires three Iron Blocks and Four Iron Ingots.

Once you’ve crafted your Anvil, you can add your bow on the first slot, then your Enchanted Book on the second slot which will then forge an Enchanted bow with the book’s stated enchantment.

You can continue combining Bows and books. But do keep in mind that combining high-level books and Bows will require higher experience levels.

With an Enchanting Table
On the other hand, the Enchanting Table uses a more randomized mechanic when giving enchantments for your weapon. Be sure to prepare your Enchanting Table, Bookshelves, and Lapis Lazuli. Moreover, you’ll also use Experience Orbs for this method.
Crafting an Enchanting Table takes one Book, two Diamonds, and four Obsidian. These are items that are challenging to find in-game, so allocate time to gather these.

Next, if you want to unlock all possible Enchantment levels, you need to place 15 Bookshelves around the Enchanting Table in this particular design.

After doing so, you can then open your Enchanting Table and add your bow and Lapis Lazuli to the slots on the left. This will then show a set of random enchantments your bow could get depending also on your experience level.

Once you’ve decided on the enchantment you want to get for your bow, just click on any of your choices on the right-hand side of the interface of the Enchanting Table to apply the enchantment.

With that, you can add enchantments to your bow. If ever you reach a point where you don’t have enough experience levels, you can gain more from killing mobs or breeding animals.
Minecraft Bow Enchantments
Now that we’ve got down adding enchantments to your bow, we can get to the details of each bow enchantment. There are a variety of enchantments players can add to their bow. These also have their different effects and mechanics as some enchantments work together and others don’t.
Another thing to remember regarding Bow Enchantments is that they don’t show their attack damage amount, unlike other Minecraft weapons.
Power
As a bow enchantment, Power increases damage dealt by arrows being shot by the player’s bow. Its counterpart is Sharpness for swords.

This enchantment has five levels of Power I to Power V. With that in mind, there’s an increase of 25% damage for each level.
Remember though that the Power enchantment works most effectively when you full-charge pull back your bow. So, if you want to deal the most damage, better strategize how you can use your time efficiently to take full-charge bow and arrow shots.
Punch
Another notable enchantment is Punch which has the same effect as Knockback. The knockback dealt by the Punch enchantment adds around three blocks of distance.

There are only two levels to this enchantment which is Punch II. This has a knockback range of 8.792 blocks.
Usually, you can find KnockBack bows spawned from killing skeletons. This has a drop rate of 8.5%.
Flame
Flame is a great enchantment that deals additional fire damage over a few seconds similar to the Fire Aspect enchantment for melee weapons. Mobs killed through flaming arrows don’t drop XP unless the player has dealt non-fire damage within the past five seconds.

In terms of what flaming arrows ignite, these only affect players, mobs, TNT, campfires, and candles.

Other blocks don’t catch fire from ignited arrows. Moreover, flaming arrows become normal arrows if fired through the water or rain.

Unbreaking
Just like other weapons, Unbreaking is also applicable to the Bow. It increases the durability of the weapon so you don’t have to repair it that often.

There are three levels for this enchantment which increases by 100% per level. Each time you use the bow with this enchantment, there’s a chance that the durability of your bow will not decrease.
Infinity
If you want to shoot arrows limitlessly, then this is a must-have enchantment for your bow.

Infinity prevents regular arrows from being consumed when shot. However, you need at least one arrow for the enchantment to work.

While you’re given limitless arrows, you can’t retrieve these upon firing except when you’re in Creative Mode. Also, this enchantment doesn’t affect Tipped and Spectral Arrows.
Moreover, you can’t stack Infinity with Mending as these are mutually exclusive. This means that the enchantments can’t be combined since that would make your bow too overpowered for the game.
Mending
Like Infinity, Mending can only be applied in a mutually exclusive manner. How Mending works is that it uses Experience Orbs to mend your bow. Then the durability of your bow will be restored.

As Mending is a very rare enchantment, its hiding spots are also rare to find. It’s found in Jungle Temples, Strongholds, Ancient City Chest Loots, Fishing, Raid Drops, and Trading.
Curse of Vanishing
The final bow enchantment is Curse of Vanishing which makes the bow disappear on the death of the player, not dropping anything as an item. Ideally, you’d want to not have any important enchantments on this cursed bow.

This enchantment becomes quite a challenge in single-player runs of the game since you may lose important gear upon death. But in multiplayer, it can discourage fellow players from looting your items.
In line with that, the Curse of Vanishing can’t be removed at all, even using an Anvil or Grindstone. So, be strategic in how you use your bow with this cursed enchantment.
When it comes to Minecraft bow enchantments, it all boils down to your playing style. If you’re the type to worry about resources, then maybe make it a priority to add Infinity or Mending. But if you want to be a long-range attacker, then put more weight on enchantments such as Power and Punch to help you become an offensive player.
There are several combinations out there that the community has made to make an optimal bow. However, at the end of the day, it’s still up to you how you want to customize this with the resources you have and your goals in playing.
