Minecraft Villagers are an important part of the gameplay experience. While Villagers seem unassuming on the surface, you can trade with them, have them do tasks, and manage their overall lives.
In fact, you can benefit significantly from managing a Villager’s profession.
Each profession provides rare items that are hard to acquire otherwise and can save you a ton of time in the process.
This guide will cover one of these profession-providing items called a Lectern.
More specifically, it will cover step by step instructions on how to make a Lectern, what you can do with one, and how to benefit from its Librarian profession.
What Is A Lectern In Minecraft?
A Lectern in Minecraft is a tall, stand-like item that dictates the Librarian Villager profession. It’s also a space for you to place books and read them if there’s any writing inside.
How To Make A Lectern In Minecraft
Making a Lectern in Minecraft is actually pretty easy, provided you have a lot of Wood around. All you need are four Wooden Slabs of any kind and one Bookshelf.
Wooden Slabs
Creating Wooden Slabs first requires Wood Planks. As you surely already know, you can get Planks of any kind by placing Wood in a Crafting Table. From there, organize the Wooden Planks as follows to create a Wooden Slab:
Bookshelf
Making a Bookshelf is a little more involved than the Slabs. You’ll need six Wood Planks, which we covered earlier. From there, you’ll need to get three Books.
You can trade a Villager for Books, find them in chests while exploring pre-made structures, or you can create them with three pieces of Paper and one Leather:
Paper
Create Paper by harvesting Sugar Cane and organizing it as follows in a Crafting Table:
Sugar Cane is a green plant that grows near water source blocks. Leave the bottom piece so it will grow back.
Leather
There are a few ways to acquire Leather. You can find it in chests, acquire it while fishing, or trade for it. Cows drop all sorts of Leather if you defeat them, and you can even craft the item with four Rabbit Hide.
To acquire Rabbit Hide, defeat Rabbits when you see them around. Foxes might also drop Rabbit Hides, if you can find them.
When you’ve acquired four Rabbit Hides, organize them as follows in a Crafting Table:
Once you’ve gathered all of the proper materials, use the following formula to create a Lectern:
What Can I Do With A Lectern In Minecraft?
Villagers will spawn as a normal entity or with a profession like Armorer or Fisherman. A villager’s profession dictates the items they’ll trade with you.
It’s vital to have a few Villagers of differing professions, as this can be the fastest way to acquire some rare items like potion materials.
Unfortunately, you cannot decide which profession a Villager will spawn with. But, if you’re looking for Librarian Villagers, the Lectern is the way to go.
Each Villager profession has a Job Site Block that they manage. For the Weaponsmith, it’s a Grindstone. For the Toolsmith, it’s a Smithing Table. For the Librarian, it’s the Lectern.
By placing a Lectern somewhere in your village, one of them will turn into a Librarian.
What Is A Librarian In Minecraft?
The Librarian Villager will trade you Enchanted Books, Glass, Lanterns, and more based on its level.
Many of these items require Emeralds from you, but some will ask you for other items like an Ink Sac. Let’s break down each Librarian level and what it sells.
Note: Level up a Villager’s profession by trading with them. Their offerings may vary.
Novice
A Novice Librarian will offer Emeralds, Enchanted Books, or a Bookshelf.
Apprentice
An Apprentice Librarian may add a Lantern or another Enchanted Book to its offerings.
Journeyman
A Journeyman Librarian may add another Enchanted Book, Glass, and potentially more Emeralds.
Expert
The Expert Librarian may add another Emerald trade as well as a Compass, Clock, or another Enchanted Book.
Master
Finally, a Master Librarian will add a Name Tag for trade. Name Tags are very rare, uncraftable items, and are worth upgrading a Librarian to Master level.
Other Lectern Fun Facts
A Lectern can act as a reading interface for you and your friends. For example, if you have a Book and Quill item, you can write in the book and place it on the Lectern at any time.
From there, you and your friends can engage in book reading by walking up to the Lectern and interacting with it.
That said, you can only place books with writing on a Lectern. An Enchanted Book or a normal Book without writing will not work.
Also, believe it or not, a Lectern can be used to generate a Redstone pulse if it’s holding a Book. In Java Edition, a Lectern with a Book on it will generate a pulse every time you turn a page.
You can use a Lectern as fuel in a Furnace if you’re feeling desperate.
And finally, you can place a Lecturn under a Note Block to give that note a bass-like sound.
That’s about everything there is to know about how to make a Lectern in Minecraft.
Now that you know how this unique item works alongside Villager professions and the Librarian in general, why not get some friends together to enjoy the benefits together?
