If you’ve ever played Minecraft, there is always one thing in common with every player – the need for ores. For new players, certain ores are difficult to find because there is no guide in the game to help you understand what the best level is to obtain the ores you need. Below is a list of all the ores and their mining levels to help new and veteran players alike.
What is Y-level in Minecraft?
Before you grab your pickaxe and start mining in caves or mountains, you need to first understand what Y-level is in Minecraft. Knowing your Y-level of mining in Minecraft gives yourself a higher chance of finding the ores you need.
The Y-level is the height and depth of where you are in the Minecraft world. If you build up, your Y-level will increase and if you dig down, your Y-level will decrease. To find what your current Y-level is, you can press F3 on your keyboard and figures that show your coordinates will display. Below is a screenshot of where you can find your Y-level:

Coal is the base for creating other resources like crafting torches for light source, fueling furnaces and blast furnaces to process other ores, smokers to make cooked food and any more.

Y-level range: -16 ~ 112
Mostly found: 48
Copper ore is a new resource that was added in the 1.17 update. It is very common to find and is mainly used for its eye-pleasing color as decoration. While it is mainly used for aesthetics, copper can also be crafted into unique items such as brushes, lightning rods, and spyglasses. The 1.21 Tricky Trials update also gave copper the ability to be crafted into trapdoors and doors.

Y-level range: -64 ~ 320
Mostly found: 15, 232
Iron ore is a relatively common resource but also a very important one. It is one of the earliest material that will help you progress with the game and a major upgrade from stone tools. Iron ore is essential in creating mid-tier armor and weaponry that will protect you and help you take less damage from mobs. Iron can also be used to craft doors, trap doors, shears, and other useful items. It is also a material that is used to create iron golems.
Gold Ore

Y-level range: -64 ~ 256
Mostly found: 32 ~ 256
Gold ore is an uncommon resource and the tools crafted from it are more efficient than those made from iron. However, the low durability of tools crafted makes it an undesirable material to craft armor and weapons with.
In the 1.16 Nether update, gold got a huge buff as it became the material that Piglin mobs are attracted to. If you wear a gold armor, the Piglins will see you as friendly and won’t attack you. You can also use gold ingots to trade with the Piglins and obtain items that are difficult to get.
Diamond Ore

Y-level range: -64 ~ 16
Mostly found: -59
Diamond ore is a rare resource that is heavily sought out by players. The number of diamonds that can be found in a vein is 1 to 10 blocks. You can use diamonds to craft high-tier equipment with high durability and high damage. Diamonds are needed when it comes to making your armor and weaponry even stronger. You need diamonds to craft an enchantment table, which can give your equipment special effects and abilities. You can also use diamonds to duplicate smithing templates, which allow you to customize the appearance of your equipment.

Y-level range: -16 ~ 320
Mostly found: 236
Emerald ore is a resource rarer than diamonds and can only be generated in a certain biome. While there is a rare chance emeralds can be found in a vein of 2 blocks, they are mostly commonly found in a block of 1. If you want to find emeralds right away, you can generate a seed that will spawn you in the Windswept Hills biome or any mountain biomes.
Emeralds don’t have as many uses as the other ores, but can be used to trade with villagers and wandering traders. Minecraft villager trading is a very good way to obtain items that you need and may help you in defeating bosses or completing the game.
Lapis Lazuli Ore
Y-level range: -64 ~ 64
Mostly found: -1
Lapis lazuli ore is an uncommon resource that is mostly used for upgrading your equipment. The enchantment tables require a combination of your equipment and lapis lazuli to enchant your stuff. To obtain the best enchantments for your armor and weapons, you will need to mine lots of lapis lazuli.
Redstone Ore
Y-level range: -64 ~ 16
Mostly found: -59
Redstone ore is uncommon to find and drops 4-5 redstone dusts for each ore that is mined. Redstone can be used for potion brewing by increasing a potion’s duration when you use it.
However, redstone is mostly used by players to build contraptions. Redstone helps power the mechanic components and allows these components to function as the player wants them to. If you are interested in making machines in Minecraft, then you will need a lot of redstone.
