If you play Minecraft on any difficulty above Peaceful, you’re sure to run into a set of Zombie Villagers. However, you may not know why. Zombie Villagers can spawn at any time in the game, whether you’re near a village or not. This article will explain everything there is to know about Zombie Villagers, including how to cure a Zombie Villager, how a Baby Zombie Villager differs from a traditional one, and more.

What Are Zombie Villagers?

A Zombie Villager is exactly what it sounds like — a zombified version of the normal Minecraft villager! Normal Villagers love to roam around their towns and make annoying sounds. Oftentimes, a normal Villager has a dedicated profession, and some of them will breed to create normal Baby Villagers.

So, where do the Zombie Villagers come into play? These monsters have a chance to appear when a Zombie defeats a villager. This… happens pretty frequently, especially if you don’t protect a village with walls or an Iron Golem. Failing to protect your Villagers will lead to a Zombie Village, and no one wants that.

Zombie villagers will chase unprotected Villagers.

There is a 5% chance of naturally spawned Zombie Villagers for every normal Zombie spawn. That said, Zombie Villagers do not spawn when Zombies defeat Villagers on Easy difficulty. On Normal difficulty, they have a 50% chance of spawning when defeated, while Hard difficulty posits a 100% chance of Zombie Villager spawns when defeated by a Zombie.

Zombie villagers can spawn with armor or weapons as well. Armed Zombie Villagers are much harder to fight.

Baby Zombie Villager

Much like there is a Baby Zombie variant, there is a Baby Zombie Villager variant. Every time a Zombie Villager spawns, there’s a 5% chance it becomes a Baby Zombie Villager.

As you may know, Baby variants are faster than their Adult counterparts. What you may not have known, however, is that Baby variants have the same health as Adults. This makes a Baby Zombie Villager wearing armor or weapons even more scary.

Baby Zombies are absolutely terrifying.

Zombie Villager Spawns

There are other Zombie Villager variants as well. For one, you may find a Savanna Zombie Villager wearing a headband, a Cleric Zombie Villager, or a Zombie Villager Priest. There are over ten variants you can find, depending on the villager’s profession and the biome it spawns within.

A variety of Zombie Villagers.

How To Cure A Zombie Villager

While you can always defeat Zombie Villagers if you’d prefer, you can also choose to cure them. To cure a Zombie Villager, you need to give the creature a Golden Apple while it’s affected by the Weakness status effect.

To get the Weakness status effect, you have to first build a Brewing Station.

An army of Zombie Villagers, lined up for curing.

How To Make A Weakened Zombie Villager

Build a Brewing Station

Building a Brewing Station allows you to make Potions of all kinds. To create a Brewing Station, simply bring three Cobblestone Blocks and one Blaze Rod into a Crafting Table and organize them as follows:

A Brewing Station is the only way to make Potions.

While Cobblestone is easy to find, you must travel into the Nether to find a Blaze Rod. You can get Blaze Rods from the Blaze monster, which you can typically find in Nether Fortresses.

Let’s discuss Weakness first.

Splash Potion of Weakness

There are a few ways to create a Weakened Zombie Villager. Weakness is a debuff that reduces an enemy’s melee attack damage by four hearts.

The most popular way to cure a Zombie Villager is with a Splash Potion of Weakness, as it’s a pretty easy Potion to make.

To make a Splash Potion of Weakness, you need a Brewing Stand. From there, simply combine a Water Bottle and a Fermented Spider Eye. Remember that you need Blaze Powder to power the brew. You can get Blaze Powder from the Nether.

Combining these two elements results in a Splash Potion of Weakness.

Once you acquire a Potion of Weakness, repeat the process with Gunpowder instead of the Fermented Spider Eye. This will turn the Potion into a Splash Potion of Weakness, meaning you can throw it.

You can throw the Potion to apply its effects.

Arrow of Weakness

You can also apply the Splash Potion of Weakness to an Arrow in order to create an Arrow of Weakness. To do this, bring a Lingering Potion of Weakness into a Crafting Table and surround it with eight Arrows.

A Lingering Potion of Weakness with eight Arrows will generate an Arrow of Weakness.

In order to make a Lingering Potion, you must apply Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion at the Brewing Station. To get Dragon’s Breath, you must capture the Ender Dragon’s breath in an empty bottle. If you’ve already defeated the Ender Dragon in your world, this guide will show you how to respawn it.

This process will generate a Lingering Potion.

Now that you’re aware of how to apply Weakness, you must acquire a Golden Apple.

How To Make A Golden Apple

Making a Golden Apple is fairly easy. It requires just eight Gold Ingots surrounding a traditional Apple.

The Golden Apple recipe is fairly easy to make.

With the Weakness affliction tool and the Golden Apple in hand, it’s time to cure a Zombie Villager.

Walk up to the afflicted Zombie Villagers, apply your Weakness, and use the Golden Apple on the afflicted Zombie Villager.

Keep in mind that multiple Zombie Villagers will attack a cured Villager.

When you combine the Golden Apple with the Weakened debuff to cure a Zombie Villager, you’ve completed the process. While you’ll need to find another Golden Apple and go through the whole brewing process to create another cured Villager, at least you know the proper steps now.
