Minecraft windows provide a view into the rest of your world — a way to safely see everything that’s going on while protecting yourself from its dangers.
However, while you can create very basic windows in Minecraft by placing the basic Glass as you see fit, building window designs is much more fun. This guide will cover everything you need to know about Minecraft window designs, including what they are, why you may use them, and a few ideas for inspiration.
What Are Minecraft Window Designs?
Minecraft window designs are neat ways to spruce up your build. Any time you create a house or other type of structure, you’re likely to give it windows.
Of course, you’re limited only by your imagination when building in Minecraft, but most of the time, you’re going to create some Glass and use it to fill rectangular holes in your structure.
While that’s all fine and dandy, why not try changing things up a bit to make your build stand out? Minecraft window designs utilize colors, blocks, and other item types to add details and provide you with a visual treat.
For example, you might use different-colored Glass or outline your window with Oak Wood blocks instead of the Wooden Planks the rest of your house uses.
There are a few other things you can make with Glass, such as a Glass Bottle, Hardened Glass, and even an End Crystal for respawning the Ender Dragon.
But before we get into the different Minecraft window designs out there, let’s start by detailing how to create Glass in the first place.
How To Make Glass
To start making Glass in Minecraft, you need a few items: Sand, a Furnace, and a fuel source. You’ll also want a Shovel, but this tool isn’t required.
Make a Shovel by placing three Sticks and either a Wooden Plank, a Cobblestone Block, an Iron Ingot, a Gold Ingot, or a Diamond in a Crafting Table as follows:
From there, you can use the Shovel to dig up a lot of Sand. Your hand works as well, but the process is much slower.
You can usually find Sand near water or submerged underneath it. However, keep in mind that digging underwater is slower than above water.
Once you have enough Sand, it’s time to find a fuel source. You can use Wood as a fuel source, but Coal is a more efficient method. You can find Coal while exploring in caves or other areas where there’s Stone — just make sure to bring a Pickaxe.
Finally, it’s time to create a Furnace. Make a Furnace by placing eight Cobblestone blocks in a Crafting Table as follows:
Place the Furnace, put your Coal in the bottom slot, and place your Sand in the top slot. This will smelt the Sand into Glass at a 1:1 ratio:
Now, you can place the Glass as you see fit, or you have two main options: create Stained Glass or create Glass Panes.
You can create Stained Glass by organizing the block in a Crafting Table as follows, with a type of Dye in the middle:
As for Glass Panes, simply fill up the top two rows in a Crafting Table with Glass, and it will convert into this thinner material:
Now, let’s get into some Minecraft window designs.
Minecraft Window Designs
Here are a few Minecraft window designs to get you inspired.
One quick note, though. You cannot collect Glass after you’ve placed it unless you have a tool with the Silk Touch enchantment. If you break Glass with your hand, you will destroy it.
Stone-Surrounded Windows
Going off of our earlier window design, add some Stone staircases on the structure’s corners and fill in a column with Chiseled Stone Bricks. These additions act as a sort of support structure, giving the design a visual improvement.
Panes and Bookshelves
Our second of the Minecraft window designs utilizes quite a few materials and combines some different ideas to create a nice starter window design.
This design combines Oak Slabs, Trap Doors, Window Panes, Barrels, Bookshelves, and even Iron Bars to create a cozy little space.
The flower pots allow for some customization, and we added some Glowstone at the bottom for some extra flair.

Spruce Wood Build
This build highlights Spruce Wood in having Spruce Wood Stairs, Fences, and Stripped Wood. From there, it combines Mossy and normal Stone Brick Stairs, Chiseled Stone Blocks, and Cobblestone Fences.
We’ve added the Brown Stained windows here, whereas the original build kept the window area empty. Either way works, and feel free to tweak things for your own design!

Spruce Wood Massive Window
This window design is one of the more versatile windows on our list. It’s another Spruce-based build, combining that wood type’s Stairs and Slabs alongside Trap Doors and Leaves.
It also utilizes Lanterns for some neat lighting effects, and we decided to place Shroomlights behind the Spruce for an extra twist.
