Minecraft has all sorts of animals, but few are as classic as the Minecraft Pigs. Minecraft Pigs have been around since nearly the beginning, and provide you with meat, experience points, and good company. However, if you’re trying to maximize your Pig-having experience in Minecraft, you need to know what they eat! Fortunately, this guide has that covered.
This guide will detail what Pigs eat, why you’d ever want to feed them, and even some fun facts about Pigs!
What Are Minecraft Pigs?
Minecraft Pigs aren’t too different from the Pigs we know in real life. Both types of Pigs are pink, have button noses, and love to snort.
In Minecraft, Pigs are a great source of food items for survival — often dropping Raw Porkchops you can cook to restore eight increments of your hunger meter. They also drop 1-3 experience points.

You can find Minecraft Pigs in a few biomes, though they’re most common in Grass Biomes. You can also find Pigs in:
- Badlands Biomes
- Jungle Biomes
- Savanna Biomes
- Taiga Biomes
Thanks to a recent Minecraft update, those latter few biomes are home to other types of Pig: the Warm Pig and the Cold Pig. These Pigs have a different look to them, though they’re functionally the same otherwise.

You may also find Pigs in random other biomes, though they’re likely to have wandered there instead of spawning there.
As for their behavior, Pigs roam around the land but will not fall into pits by themselves. They will not attack you or any Mobs, and will opt to run from them instead.
However, a Pig can get struck by lightning, and it will turn into a zombified Piglin. These are scary, and they will attack you.
Otherwise, you can ride Pigs if you equip them with a Saddle.

That said, you can’t direct saddled Pigs unless you have the Carrot on a Stick item.
This brings us naturally into our next question: what do Pigs eat in Minecraft?
What Do Pigs Eat In Minecraft?
Minecraft Pigs eat a couple of different items: Carrots, Potatoes, and Beetroots. Let’s break them down.
Carrot
The Carrot is a food item that restores three points of your hunger meter. You can find it in chests randomly throughout the game and in some Farmland that spawns in Villages.

Once you acquire a Carrot, you can use it to restore your hunger meter, or you can plant it in Farmland to grow more. If you plan on breeding Pigs, the latter option is perhaps the better one.
You can also use the Carrot in combination with a Fishing Rod to make the Carrot on a Stick item. Organize the two items on a Crafting Table as follows:

This way, you can direct Pigs around while they’re saddled.
You can also combine the Carrot with eight Gold Nuggets to create a Golden Carrot. This satiates you much more than the normal Carrot, and you can also use it while brewing.

Finally, the Carrot is a key ingredient in Rabbit Stew, which also requires a Bowl, a Cooked Rabbit, a Baked Potato, and a Mushroom.
Potato
The Potato is similar to the Carrot in that you can harvest it from Farmland in Villages or find it in random Chests. You also plant the item itself to grow more of it, rather than using Seeds like many other food items.

Potatoes only refill one segment of your hunger meter per, so it’s best to cook them if you’re not using them to breed Pigs. Cooking a Potato results in a Baked Potato, which restores five hunger meter points.
Beetroot
Unlike the other two food items on this list, the Beetroot requires Seeds to grow. You can find Beetroot growing in a Village or while searching through random Chests.

The Beetroot only restores one hunger point, but combining six of them with a Bowl results in Beetroot Soup, which restores six hunger points.
You can also use it to make Red Dye.
What’s The Point Of Feeding Pigs In Minecraft?
Now that you know all about Pigs and the foods Pigs eat, it’s time to learn why you would feed them in the first place.
Well, feeding Pigs allows you to breed them, creating baby Pigs that eventually grow into an adult Pig.

Breeding requires two nearby Pigs who are adults. You can feed each of them either a Carrot, Potato, or a Carrot. From there, they’ll enter Breeding Mode.
You can tell if an adult Pig is in Breeding Mode once it emits little hearts while walking around.

Once two adult Pigs are in Breeding Mode, they’ll walk towards each other and produce a baby Pig. Then you’ll have three Pigs!
The baby Pig takes twenty minutes to turn into an adult Pig. You can also feed them to speed this time up.

Also, adult Pigs can only enter Breeding Mode every five minutes.
More Pig Fun Facts
Believe it or not, there are Pig paintings in Minecraft as well.

That’s how revered Pigs are in Minecraft.
Also, there’s a Skeleton Pig you can get in Minecraft. However, you can’t find it in the base game. Instead, you have to access the Halloween Edition mash-up pack.

If you want to bring the Pig love to real life, you can also find a baby Pig plush from retailers.
