What Is The Minecraft Villager?

The Minecraft Villager is a passive mob that lives in a pre-generated Minecraft Village. These tradeable NPCs roam around their village and take on Jobs via Job Site Blocks.

Minecraft Villager Jobs Explained

Villager Jobs, also known as professions, are specific tasks a Villager can take on. Each Villager Job changes the items they can trade with you, with each offering based on the Job they take on.

You can assign Villager Jobs via a Job Site Block.

Job Site Block

A Job Site Block can be many different things based on the Job in question. For example, a Cauldron is the Job Site Block for a Leatherworker, while a Barrel is the Job Site Block for a Fisherman.

When you place a Job Site Block, a nearby Unemployed Villager (we’ll get into that later) will find it and take over that profession.

If a Villager takes over a Job Site Block, they will change clothes and trade different items with you. These clothes also vary across different Biomes, giving Villager Jobs a bit of extra flair.

As you trade with a Villager, they will gain experience points and level up over time. With each level, they’ll offer rarer and rarer items.

The Villager Job levels are:

• Novice
• Apprentice
• Journeyman
• Expert
• Master

List Of Villager Jobs

There are all sorts of Villager professions and jobs. Here’s a list of some of them.

Unemployed Villagers

Funnily enough, we’ll start with unemployed Villagers.

Unemployed Villagers initially exist without a goal and roam around searching for a Job Site Block. If there are no Job Site Blocks to be found, an Unemployed Villager will roam around gossiping. That said, you can trade with an Unemployed Villager, so they’re not entirely useless.

Armorer Villager Job Site Block

The Armorer provides you with armor pieces in exchange for Emeralds. This Armor can vary based on level, but it starts at Iron or Chainmail pieces.

A higher-level Armorer will then offer Enchanted Diamond Armor pieces in exchange for a decent amount of Emeralds, which can be useful if you’re struggling to acquire an Enchantment Table.

The Armorer’s Job Site Block is a Blast Furnace, which you can craft with five Iron Ingots, three Smooth Stone, and one Furnace:

Butcher Villager Job Site Block

Based on its level, the Butcher Villager Job will trade you Cooked Meat, Rabbit Stew, and Emeralds.

This Villager Job can be a great way to farm Emeralds, as the Butcher’s Journeyman level will give you Emeralds in exchange for Raw Mutton and Raw Beef. If you’re able to farm that raw meat, you can trade tons of them for Emeralds and use those to trade with other Villager Jobs.

The Butcher’s Job Site Block is a Smoker, which you can craft with any set of four Logs, Stripped Logs, or Stripped Wood in combination with a Furnace:

Cleric Villager Job Site Block

The Cleric is a very valuable Villager Job, providing you with Ender Pearls, Lapis Lazuli, and a Bottle o’ Enchanting, amongst other things, as you level it up.

As you can imagine from its name, this Villager Job primarily focuses on the more surreal items in Minecraft.

The Cleric’s Job Site Block is a Brewing Stand which you can craft using a Blaze Rod and three Cobblestone blocks:

Cartographer Villager Job Site Block

The Cartographer Villager focuses on Maps and will give you unique Maps, such as the Ocean Explorer Map or the Woodland Explorer Map, as you level it up.

These are Map types that are hard to acquire from any other source, so focusing on the Cartographer is a valuable way to spend your time.

The Cartographer Job Site Block is a Cartography Table, which you can craft using two Paper and four Wooden Planks:

Farmer Villager Job Site Block

Farmer Villagers offer valuable food like Suspicious Stew, Cake, Golden Carrot, and more in exchange for Emeralds.

Also, Farmer Villagers will tend to nearby Farms, planting and harvesting crops as needed. They’re an ideal way to keep a Village producing food, which you can grab for yourself to save some time.

Because they work outside, they’re the most susceptible to becoming Zombie Villagers. Fortunately, attacked Villagers flee to nearby houses, so keep a safe place near the farm to mitigate this.

The Farmer Villagers have a Job Site Block in the Composter:

Librarian Villager Job Site Block

The Librarian Villager provides Enchanted Books, which you can apply to your Weapons, Armors, and Tools. Notably, these Enchanted Books contain randomized Enchantments, meaning you can check with the Librarian regularly for new options.

This Villager Job is also one of the most reliable ways to acquire a Name Tag — it becomes available at a Master level Librarian. You can also get mending books from this villager.

The Librarian Villager Job Site Block is a Lectern, which is craftable with four Wooden Slabs and a Bookshelf:

Shepherd Villager Job Site Block

The nice thing about a Shepherd Villager Job is it can provide you with various colored Wool Blocks — an essential part of decorating your world in a slew of colors.

As you level up, the Shepherd will offer multi-colored Carpets, Beds, and Banners. At its highest level, the Shepherd will offer a Painting.

The Shepherd’s Job Site Block is a Loom. You can craft a Loom with two String and two Wooden Planks:

Weaponsmith Villager Job Site Block

Weaponsmith Villager Jobs provide Enchanted versions of the Diamond Sword and the Diamond Axe as you level them up, though it starts off with an Enchanted Iron Sword, which can be helpful if you’re starting out.

The Weaponsmith’s Job Site Block is a Grindstone. You can craft a Grindstone with two Sticks, one Stone Slab, and two Planks:

To create more Villagers, you can put Villagers into Love Mode to create Baby Villagers. Baby Villagers wander randomly until they’re grown and will take over Minecraft Villager Jobs as needed.

Put Villagers in Love Mode by dropping food, such as Bread or Carrots, near them. Any nearby Villagers will pick them up. Over time, Villagers with enough food will mate and create Baby Villagers.
