Minecraft is one of the deepest games in existence. There are many different resources, materials, and other items to find. On top of this, many of these items have hidden uses you would rarely think of upon first finding them.

One such item is Amethyst and its many varieties. If you’ve been wanting to find Amethyst in Minecraft, this guide has you covered. We’ll get into everything you need to know about this rare crystal, including how to find Amethyst Geodes, what you can create once you’ve mined it, and all the details possible regarding the Amethyst Block, among other things.

What Is Amethyst In Minecraft?

Amethyst is a purple material in Minecraft that comes in a few formats. One of those formats is through shards, which is the most useful form of the resource.

After all, you can use Amethyst Shards to create Blocks of Amethyst, a Calibrated Sculk Sensor, a Spyglass, or purple Tinted Glass.

Even more than this, you can use it to create Purple Trim or to duplicate Allays. Amethyst is really a versatile material, so it’s no wonder you want a guide to find the purple wonder in Minecraft.

How To Find Amethyst In Minecraft

Finding Amethyst is like trying to find Diamonds in Minecraft — you need to try a bit harder than you do other resources. The fastest way to find Amethyst is by searching for Minecraft Amethyst Geodes.

What Are Amethyst Geodes?

Amethyst Geodes are groups of Amethyst Blocks you can find underground. They’re surrounded by Smooth Basalt and Calcite blocks and hold Amethyst Shards, Amethyst Clusters, and Amethyst Blocks.

Amethyst Shards, Amethyst Blocks, Budding Amethyst, and Amethyst Clusters spawn in a Geode.

Sometimes, a Geode is entirely covered by Stone and other materials, while other times, you’ll see it via a crack while exploring caves.

Sometimes an Amethyst Geode has a crack in it, making it visible while exploring.

You can only find Amethyst Geodes between Y levels 30 and -58, with each Minecraft chunk having a 1 in 28 chance of spawning one. For more info on Minecraft coordinates, follow this guide.

If you don’t want to find Amethyst Geodes through exploration, you can use an online tool like this Amethyst Geode Finder.

To use this service, ensure that the version number is set to your version of Minecraft. From there, find your world seed.

Find Amethyst Geodes through this tool.

To find your world seed, type /seed into the Minecraft chat box and press Enter.

Your world seed will help you find Amethyst Geodes.

This command will make your world’s seed appear in the chat. Then, you can click the seed to add it to your clipboard. Paste it into the Amethyst Geode Finder to help you find Amethyst Geodes.

Once done, the Finder will generate a map of your world. Hover over the purple squares to get the coordinates for nearby Geodes.

Each purple square represents your world's Geodes.

When inside, gather as many materials as you can. It’s best to mine these materials with a Pickaxe. Now, let’s break down the different types of Amethyst within a Geode.

Amethyst Shards & Amethyst Clusters

You can gather Amethyst Shards by breaking a fully grown Amethyst Cluster.

Amethyst Clusters are little sprouts of Amethyst Shards that drop when you break them.

An Amethyst Cluster grows in multiple stages. The first three stages are called Amethyst Buds, while the fully grown material, its final stage, is called an Amethyst Cluster.

Amethyst Buds grow from Budding Amethyst Blocks. You can differentiate a Budding Amethyst Block from other types of Amethyst by its cracks.

This crack means you're looking at a budding Amethyst Block.

When you run into this type of Amethyst Block, you’ll know that an Amethyst Bud is set to grow out of it. Give them some time to grow into full Amethyst Clusters.

While you can break Amethyst Clusters with any tool, using something besides a Pickaxe will result in two Shards. Breaking an Amethyst Cluster with a Pickaxe gives you four Amethyst Shards. Make sure that it’s fully grown, however. Mining an Amethyst Bud will result in fewer Shards.

You can mine budding Amethyst Blocks with a Silk Touch Pickaxe to keep it in this format, allowing you to place the cluster wherever you’d like.

If you bring Amethyst to a Crafting Table, you can turn it into a Block of Amethyst using the following recipe:

Recreate the Amethyst Blocks that make up an Amethyst Geode. It's mainly a decorative Block.

While many players craft Amethyst Blocks for decorative purposes, these Blocks can also repeat the signal from a Calibrated Sculk Sensor, which we discuss below.

Otherwise, you can use it in the following recipes:

Calibrated Sculk Sensor

A Calibrated Sculk Sensor picks up vibrations from players, Mobs, and other entities. The device goes off when it picks up a vibration, alerting those nearby to any movement. Basically, it’s a type of alarm.

The Calibrated Sculk Sensor picks up vibrations at a faster rate and further distance than the default Sensor.

Spyglass

The Spyglass is a simple but effective tool that allows you to zoom in on far away views.

The Spyglass is one of the few uses for Copper as well.

Tinted Glass

Minecraft comes with all sorts of Tinted Glass colors. Use Amethyst Shards for the purple variety.

Each recipe turns into two Tinted Glass.

Armor Trim

Finally, you can use Amethyst Shards to trim armor.

You’ll need a Smithing Table, an Armor Trim Template, a piece of armor, and an Amethyst Shard to trim armor. Follow this guide for everything you need to know about armor trimming.

Once you’ve acquired all of these materials, combine them in a Smithing Table like this:

Such a combination will result in an Amethyst-trimmed piece of armor — one that will stand out amongst your friends.
