Minecraft has many hidden features. It’s got experimental cheats, chunk reloading, and a few other secret mechanics to master. However, one of the most helpful features you can utilize is the coordinates.
With Minecraft being an endless world, having something like coordinates in mind helps make exploration a bit more bearable. In this guide, we’ll go over how to set coordinates as enabled, how to track your position with coordinates, and so much more.
How To Turn On Coordinates In Minecraft Java Edition
Coordinates are an essential part of the Minecraft experience. After all, they can guide you back to your home base, take you to your spawn point, or allow you to keep track of Minecraft’s many pre-made structures.
Minecraft displays coordinates in an (X, Y, Z) format and are based on your world’s origin point. The origin point is, of course, 0,0,0.
The X-axis is first and denotes your location east or west (longitude) of the world’s origin point.
The Y-axis is next, denoting your location above or below the origin point.
The Z-axis is last, denoting your location north or south (latitude) of the origin point.
Coordinates are displayed differently in Minecraft Java Edition vs. Minecraft Bedrock Edition. In Minecraft Bedrock Edition, you can toggle the coordinates displayed option at any point via the World Options menu.
In Minecraft Java Edition, you can press F3 to bring up the game’s debug menu. Here, it will display coordinates on the left-hand side.
Of course, the XYZ section details where you’re standing. The Block section underneath denotes the coordinates of the block you’re looking at. You can also view additional info like the distance you are from each chunk border and which direction you’re facing.
How To Use Coordinates In Minecraft
There are a few ways to take advantage of coordinates in Minecraft.
It’s best to keep a sheet of paper near your PC while playing. This way, you can write down directions to any spot you find in the world.
Have you discovered a Woodland Mansion you’re not ready to take on? Write down its coordinate position and return later. Keep a list of essential coordinates, such as your base location or respawn point, as well.
It’s foolish not to use coordinates, especially as you continue exploring the world.
If you’re playing in a world with cheats enabled, you can use coordinates to teleport places.
Simply type /tp [username] (X, Y, Z) to teleport yourself anywhere you’d like.
You can also use the Locate command to find important structures and biomes. The game will display coordinates in the chat box, allowing you to tp whenever you want.
If you come from Bedrock Edition, you may know the command gamerule showcoordinates true. Unfortunately, that command doesn’t apply to Java Edition. Instead, you have to utilize the debug menu.
Fortunately, the debug menu is available to any player. Bedrock Edition requires a server admin to enable coordinates, while Java Edition players can view coordinates regardless of the server.
Java Edition’s menu also gives it an advantage over console players like Xbox. After all, console players are subject to the rules of server owners, while Java Edition allows for complete customization of the player experience.
Fun Coordinate Facts
Here are a few fun facts to know about in-game coordinates in Minecraft. You can use coordinates to find rare items like Diamonds, and your world is limited by certain height levels as well.
Maximum Coordinates
The highest level at which you can build blocks is Y-level 320. The game will prevent you from placing blocks any higher than this.
-64 is the lowest coordinate you can place blocks. In fact, this level is full of unbreakable Bedrock. You can only break through Bedrock in Creative Mode, and even then, you’ll just fall into an endless pit.
Diamond Spawning
If you weren’t aware, Diamonds only spawn at Y coordinate 15 or lower. You will never find Diamonds in any cave above that height.
Now that you know everything there is to know about coordinates in Minecraft, why not get some friends together to find some rare structures?
