Minecraft has all sorts of mobs, some passive and some otherwise. However, no mob in Minecraft is quite like the Armadillo.
Introduced in the 1.20.5 update, Minecraft’s Armadillo mob is one of the game’s more passive creatures. But while the creature seems simple and somewhat featureless on the surface, it actually provides quite a useful item.
That said, you need to feed an Armadillo in order to get more of them and acquire even more of its precious items. For that, we need to answer the question, “What Do Armadillos Eat in Minecraft?” This guide has you covered.
What Is An Armadillo In Minecraft?
The Armadillo appears in warmer biomes and enjoys roaming around aimlessly.
It doesn’t do much in terms of action, but if threatened, the Armadillo will roll up into a cube to protect itself — Minecraft’s version of rolling up into a ball. An Armadillo will also roll up if you sprint nearby it or if undead enemies cross by it.
While rolled up, an Armadillo will take significantly less damage. It won’t want to eat or move, but it will occasionally peek out of its shell to see if a threat is gone.
Fun fact: the Armadillo appears on the Minecraft Launcher loading screen as well.
What Can I Do With An Armadillo In Minecraft?
An Armadillo’s primary purpose is to provide Scutes for creating Wolf Armor—a necessary defense for our furry friends. An Armadillo Scute is a small piece of an Armadillo shell that drops when a Brush is used on it.
Each Brush used on an Armadillo drops one Scute. There is no cooldown on this process, and you can use the Brush as many times as its durability will allow. Armadillos also drop Scutes every few minutes without your involvement.
How To Find Armadillos In Minecraft
As mentioned, Armadillos like warm biomes. While there are quite a few warm biomes in the game, the best biomes to find Armadillos are the Savanna and Badlands biomes.
Savanna and Badlands Biomes
There are several different types of Savanna biome, but all of them include Acacia Trees alongside the typical Oak Trees. These biomes have a washed-out, greenish tint, likely a result of their hotter temperatures.
As for the Badlands, these Teracotta-filled deserts are much more standout. Many Badlands biomes are mountainous and full of browns, reds, and similar hues. These spaces are often next to normal deserts and are a great way to find Armadillos.
Armadillos often spawn in groups of two. To bring them back to your base, you can use a Lead.
How To Breed Armadillos In Minecraft
Like many Minecraft mobs, you can breed Armadillos to create a baby Armadillo.
A baby armadillo won’t drop any Scutes, but it will grow into an adult Armadillo, which you can use a Brush on. To breed an Armadillo, you have to feed two of them to activate their romance mode. The two Armadillos will then produce a baby.
However, breeding Armadillos requires answering an important question: what do Armadillos eat in Minecraft?
What Do Armadillos Eat In Minecraft?
To breed Armadillos, you need to feed them their favorite food: Spider Eyes. Spider Eyes are relatively easy to acquire — they drop often from the Cave Spiders you’ll find whenever you spelunk.
Baby Armadillos will grow into adult Armadillos after a short period of time. But you can speed up that process by giving them Spider Eyes. A Spider Eye increases a baby Armadillo’s growth by 10% each time. There is no cooldown on this.
How To Make Wolf Armor In Minecraft
Now that you’ve figured out how to gather Armadillo Scutes from our little guys, it’s time to make Wolf Armor for your sharp-toothed partner.
This type of armor is different from the armor you make for yourself. The armor you craft for yourself consists of four pieces and can be quite expensive to create, while a Wolf’s Armor requires only one piece.
Even better, a Wolf’s Armor only needs six Scutes to create, making these Armadillo drops quite accessible once you have a Brush and the creature itself.
Once you’ve acquired a set of six Scutes, you can take them to a crafting table and organize them as follows:
Congratulations! You now have armor for your Wolf.
How Does A Wolf’s Armor Work?
Now, here are a few specific ways this armor differs from your standard Minecraft armor.
For one, you cannot enchant Wolf’s Armor. At least, you can’t in the regular game. If you enter Creative Mode in Java Edition, you can technically enchant the armor with an Anvil.
Also, you can only equip this armor on a tamed Wolf. Attempting to equip a wild Wolf will not work.
You can dye Wolf’s Armor in various colors, though using the Armor on a Cauldron with water will remove that dye. To remove armor from a Wolf, use Shears.
Finally, you can repair your Wolf’s Armor with an Armadillo Scute. Simply equip the Scute, aim at your Wolf, and right-click it. Each Scute restores eight points of durability.
