Minecraft’s 1.19 Wild Update introduced frogs, bringing life to stagnant Swamp and the new Mangrove Swamp biomes. These amphibians aren’t just aesthetic; they contribute to the ecosystem and offer a unique way to get Froglights, a new light source.
Minecraft 1.19 Frog Breeding – Froglight – Matrix
We’ve put together this handy matrix infographic for you to bookmark or print as an easy at-a-glance reference for how to breed frogs in Minecraft.
Gather Materials
To answer the question, how to breed frogs in Minecraft, you will first need to gather some supplies. Start by collecting at least x2 slimeballs. Though, It is prudent to bring extra when planning to breed a lot of frogs! You will also need at least one water bucket for each Tadpole you plan to bring back to your base or move to another biome.
Needed Breeding Items: |
Tadpoles hatch in small groups, usually between 2 and 5. You’ll need no more than x5 Water Buckets to collect them all. But hey, feel free to bring extras if you’d like! |
How To Get Slimeballs in Minecraft?
Initially, Slimeballs could only be obtained gotten by hunting down and killing a Slime mob. However, modern versions of Minecraft have evolved and now include a few additional sources for these tasty frog treats.
- Killing Slimes – these aggressive mobs spawn in the Overworld regardless of the weather conditions. Look for them in the following locations:
- Slime chunks below layer 40, at any light level.
- In Swamp biomes at night (light level ≤ 7) and near the surface in layers 51-69.
- Baby Pandas have a 1⁄700 chance of dropping a Slimeball when sneezing.
- Wandering traders sometimes offer to sell Slimeballs at the cost of x4 Emeralds.
- You can also craft x9 Slimeballs from one Slime Block like so:
Where To Get Water Buckets?
Water Buckets are not strictly craftable. They are made by taking an empty Bucket to a water source and using your right-click button on it. This will convert a single Bucket into a Water Bucket. You can then use it to carry one Tadpole around with you.
- Note: You can craft empty Buckets with x3 Iron Ingots, in a lower case “v” pattern like so:
Locate Two Frogs
Once you’ve acquired your materials, you will need to seek out two frogs to breed together. These friendly amphibian mobs spawn naturally in groups of 2-5 in either the Swamp or Mangrove Swamp biomes.
Love Mode – Breed Two Frogs
Approach the two frogs and feed them a Slimeball by holding it in your hand and using your right-click button. If successful, hearts will appear above the two breeding frogs indicating they have entered into Love Mode.
Tip: You can wrangle two frogs closer together by using a Lead on one of them or more simply by holding a Slimeball in your hand so they will follow you.
Follow The Pregnant Frog
After Love Mode is complete, one of the frogs will become pregnant and seek out a nearby water source. Follow the pregnant frog and wait patiently for it to lay its eggs. These eggs are called frogspawn and appear as a small cluster of little black dots ontop of the water.
Wait For Tadpoles To Hatch & Grow
You will need to wait a short period of time for the Frogspawn to hatch. Each Frogspawn block hatches into several individual Tadpoles. These little guys swim around until they mature into adult frogs.
Frogspawn & Tadpole Facts
- Frogspawn take from 3-6 minutes hatch and produce 2-5 Tadpoles.
- Tadpoles need one Minecraft day (20 minutes) to mature into adult frogs.
- Tadpoles swim in water but die quickly on dry land due to low health.
- Tadpoles flop about seeking a nearby water source when on land.
- Tadpoles will follow nearby players who are holding a Slimeball in hand.
- Use Water Buckets to capture and transport them to another biome.
- Speed up growth time by feeding Slimeballs (+10% growth per use) to Tadpoles.
- Beware! Axolotls will hunt and kill nearby Tadpoles.
How To Collect & Transport Tadpoles
Tadpoles are aquatic creatures that can be collected and transported just like fish and axolotls. To safely transport and store a Tadpole, you need to use a Water Bucket. When you see them, get in close, switch to your Water Bucket and right-click on them. It will appear in your inventory as a Bucket of Tadpole.
Once you have the Bucket of Tadpole, you can safely take it back to your base or transport it to another biome to grow a different species of frog.
Remember, the green cold frog variant does not have a natural spawning biome. You can only obtain it by transporting a Bucket of Tadpole and allowing it to grow into an adult frog in one of the following cold climate biomes:
- For all editions, these biomes include: Deep Frozen Ocean, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Frozen River, Grove, Ice Spikes, Jagged Peaks, Snowy Beach, Snowy Plains, Snowy Slopes, Snowy Taiga, and The End.
- For Bedrock Edition, the additional biomes are: Cold Ocean and Deep Cold Ocean.
- For Java Edition, the additional biomes are: Deep Dark, End Barrens, End Highlands, End Midlands, and Small End Islands.
Frog Variants & Environment
Here’s the interesting part: the environment where the Tadpole matures plays an important role when breeding frogs. It determines the color of the adult frog! Orange (Temperate) and white (Warm) frogs can spawn naturally in the world, while green ones require some breeding magic.
- Orange frogs, typically found in Swamp biomes, will become adults if their eggs hatch in a temperate biome like Plains or Taiga.
- White frogs, on the other hand, frequent Mangrove Swamps and hatch into adults in warm biomes like Deserts or Jungles.
- Finally, the elusive green frog can be obtained by hatching the frogspawn in a cold biome, such as Snowy Plains or a Frozen Ocean.
So, if you’re looking to add a splash of color to your Minecraft world, be sure to experiment with frog breeding in different biomes! We’ve included a handy list of how each zone will affect your Tadpole so you don’t have to guess.

How To Make Froglights in Minecraft
Frogs are not just for aesthetics! These helpful little creatures can also be used to obtain a unique light source item called a Froglight. Froglights are special because they cannot be crafted. You will need a frog’s digestive system to do the work. Frogs will attack nearby small Magma Cubes, instantly killing the mob. Then it spits out a Froglight based on the color of the frog in question. The chart below illustrates which frogs produce which Froglights.
Ochre Froglight | Pearlescent Froglight | Verdant Froglight |
Where To Find A Small Magma Cube?
Be careful, these fiery monsters reside in the Nether, which is a very dangerous place! You can find the small variant of the Magma Cube mixed in with larger ones. Get your frogs near these little guys and they will flick out their tongue and gobble them up in one bite which will then spawn the Froglight matching the species of the frog in question.
Conclusion
So, not only can you create a vibrantly colored frog army, but you can also harness their unique abilities to illuminate your Minecraft world in new ways!
