Minecraft is a complex game. Depending on your world size, playing it asks your graphics driver to process all sorts of calculations. Sometimes, those calculations can be too much, and your game will crash. This becomes even more of a potential problem if you play with mods.
If you’ve been playing Minecraft with mods and are experiencing the exit code 1 Minecraft error message, this guide is for you. We’ll cover the exit code, why it happens, and how you can try to solve it.
What Is The Minecraft Exit Code 1 Error?
What’s interesting about the Minecraft exit code 1 error is that it can happen for a few reasons.
Your Minecraft game may sometimes crash with the exit code 1 error.
Typically, the exit code 1 error happens when your game runs out of allocated RAM or if you have too many mods installed that are incompatible with one another. That said, it can also happen if your PC drivers are outdated or for a few other reasons. It’s hard to say exactly, but following these steps will help you address all of the common issues.
How To Fix The Exit Code 1 Minecraft Error
Changing the Java Executable Path
Changing the Java executable path could help fix your issue, as an invalid Java runtime configuration can sometimes cause exit code 1.
1. Open the Minecraft Launcher
Open the Minecraft Launcher through the desktop or through the Xbox app.
2. Navigate to Java Edition
Navigate to Minecraft: Java Edition on the Launcher’s left-hand side.
3. Select the Installations tab
Click on the Installations tab on the Launcher’s top bar.
4. Navigate to the latest release settings
Hover over the Latest release option and click the … option. Then, click Edit.
5. Click More Options
Select More Options at the page’s bottom right.
6. Type Java.exe in the Java Executable bar
Find the Java Executable option and type Java.exe in the box. This will change Minecraft’s Java executable path and will hopefully fix the issue.
Note: Make sure to click Save on the Launcher’s bottom right corner once you’re done.
Uninstall Minecraft
When you get this error code, you might want to reinstall Minecraft. First, you want to back up your worlds so you don’t lose access to them upon reinstalling the game.
Then, you can reinstall the game via the Minecraft Launcher.
1. Open Start
Open Start via your computer’s taskbar.
2. Search for Add or Remove Programs
In the Start menu’s search bar, type Add or Remove Programs. Then, click on the Control Panel application. This will open the Installed Apps partition of your computer’s Settings.
3. Type Java Edition
Type Java Edition in the Installed Apps search bar.
4. Uninstall Java Edition
Click on the … menu that appears when hovering over the game. Then, select Uninstall.
From here, you can reinstall Minecraft through the Minecraft Launcher.
Disable Mods
Disabling mods might be the fastest way to remove the exit code 1 error.
There are a few ways to turn off mods. To start, you can simply delete the Minecraft mods folder by pressing Win + R to open Run, typing %appdata% in the search bar, entering the .minecraft folder, and deleting the mods folder.
However, it’s more likely you have mods installed through a launcher like CurseForge. If that’s the case, you’ll need to manage your incompatible mods (and modpacks!) through the CurseForge launcher settings.
1. Open CurseForge
Open CurseForge via its desktop icon.
2. Navigate to My Modpacks
Find the My Modpacks tab under Minecraft.
3. Right-click your mods
Hover over your installed mods and right-click them to open an options menu.
4. Select Delete Profile
Select Delete Profile from the options menu that appears. Then, click Delete on the subsequent pop-up.
We recommend deleting all of your mods and reinstalling them individually to see if you still get the exit code 1 error. If you stop getting it, one of your mods was likely causing the issue.
Update Your Graphics Driver
If you get the exit code 1 error, you may be working with an outdated graphics driver.
There are many ways to update your graphics drivers, depending on your brand of GPU. Many of you will likely use your GPU’s relevant software, such as Nvidia’s GeForce Experience app, but this guide will detail a universal way to update your drivers.
1. Open Device Manager
Open the Start Menu and type Device Manager in its search bar.
2. Select Display adapters
Select Display adapters, and your GPUs will appear.
3. Select Update driver
Right-click on your primary GPU and select Update driver
4. Select Search automatically for drivers
Finally, select Search automatically for drivers, and your PC will automatically install the latest version.
Change The Minecraft Launcher Install Path
Changing the Minecraft Launcher path might help solve the exit code 1 issue. However, before following this process, you must create a new folder to place Minecraft. Create that folder, navigate to the .minecraft folder using the above methods, copy the .minecraft folder into the new destination, and delete the original folder.
Then, follow these next steps.
1. Right-click the Minecraft Launcher shortcut
Right-click your Minecraft Launcher desktop shortcut to open an additional menu. Then, select Properties.
2. Find the Target text box
Find the Target textbox and navigate to the end of what’s typed in there.
Note: If the target text box is greyed out, you must run the program as an administrator and try again.
3. Add the target folder
At the end of the target field, add a space and type –workDir and the name of your new folder. For example, you might type –workDir C:\newminecraftfolder.
