There is almost an endless amount of exploration to be had in Minecraft. From traversing biomes to battling mobs, your journeys in your world will take you down all kinds of various routes. If you like the idea of excavating ancient items, the brush is your go-to. With this item, you unlock archeology in your Minecraft world and can start discovering old things hidden away in certain blocks.
It’s been a long time coming, but archeology features many ancient items for you to get your hands on, and if you’re lucky enough while looking in the right place, you can even find the sniffer mob. Here is how to make your own brush so you can start looking for these treasures.
How to make a brush in Minecraft
To craft a brush in Minecraft, you need to gather one feather, one copper ingot, and one stick. When you have them, find a crafting table and place the feather in the top middle slot, the copper ingot in the direct center of the second row, and then the stick in the bottom middle slot. You can then move the completed brush from the crafting table to your inventory.
Gathering the resources to make a brush in Minecraft
- If you are having problems getting the materials for the brush crafting recipe, feathers are easily found by killing chickens. Chickens spawn naturally in most grassy biomes in the Overworld.
- Copper ingots are found by killing Drowned or made by smelting raw copper, which is found by breaking down copper ore blocks with a stone pickaxe or stronger. Find copper ore blocks in Y levels 0-96, but it most commonly appears around level 48.
- Sticks can be made by breaking down wooden blocks.
How to use a brush in Minecraft for archeology
With your trusty brush equipped, you can now start rubbing down the appropriate blocks with your brand new tool. You need to find suspicious sand or suspicious gravel blocks. These can be found in cold and warm ocean biome ruins, at the bottom of desert pyramids and wells in a desert biome, or in trail ruins. Note that suspicious blocks are rare, so you have to get lucky for them to appear even in these locations.
When found, approach the block, and whatever you do, do not break it. If you do, it and any item inside will be lost forever. If you are trying to get at a suspicious block in a cold or warm ocean ruin, be sure you are prepared to stay underwater for a while.
Use your brush to dust the ancient block with [right-click, L2, LT, or ZL] to gently rub the item out for you to grab.
The distinction between suspicious blocks and the normal sand or gravel blocks that you find all over the place is small but distinct when you see it. The style on the block itself is just different enough for those with sharp eyes to see. If you are in any of the areas mentioned above looking for these blocks, be sure to be careful where you dig.
If you are unsure if a block is suspicious or normal sand or gravel, you can use your brush on it to test it. If the block starts cracking like you are mining it, it is a suspicious block.
Similar to other tools like shovels, pickaxes, and more, brushes have durability and will break down with use. Use it too much, and damaged brushes will break for good. Luckily, Minecraft players can always find the Mending enchantment so they repair when you get experience, or the Unbreaking enchantment to make the tool lose less durability as you use it. When you come across an enchantment book with either enchantment attached, take it and your brush to an anvil and combine the two to get more use out of your item. You can also combine two brushes to rejuvenate their durability a bit if you don’t want to go through the process to craft a new brush.
Note: Suspicious blocks only give items when they are naturally generated. If you place a suspicious sand or gravel block in Creative Mode, it will be empty.
How to use a brush to get armadillo scute in Minecraft
As time goes on and more updates come out, the brush in Minecraft will get more uses. That is the case since armadillos were added to the game. Normally, you could find these creatures walking around a savanna or mesa biome, cage them up, and wait for them to drop armadillo scute, which you can use to make wolf armor. However, if you have a brush, you can use the tool and begin brushing on the armadillo to make it create an armadillo scute instantly. However, one swipe of the brush on an armadillo takes off a good chunk of durability from the brush, so you may want to have extras in hand or use one of the above enchantments. Keep brushing it until you get six of these items.
With your six armadillo scutes in your inventory, find a crafting table. Put three down the left column, one in the direct center, and the other two in the middle right and bottom right slots. This crafting recipe will let you move the wolf armor to your inventory.
Even after equipping your wolf armor to a wolf, armadillo scutes can be useful. If you have one in hand, you can interact with the wolf after it has taken some hits and slightly repair the armor instantly.
What items can you get from using a brush?
When you are on your archeology digs, the items you can exclusively get from these acts are pottery sherds, Relic music disc, and sniffer eggs. Four pottery sherds can be combined to create ancient pottery, and sniffer eggs can be placed on moss blocks to hatch a sniffer mob, which can help you find ancient seeds.
However, there is a large selection of other potential items from valuable treasures to junk you can find depending on the location. These items include:
- Smithing templates
- Emerald
- Diamond
- Lead
- Candles
- Dyes
- And much more
