Minecraft’s 1.19 The Wild Update introduced features such as new mobs, new block types, and even new biomes.
Among the new biomes that were added, the mangrove swamp biome gave players access to new blocks and mobs. Frogs and tadpoles were added to the update as the newest mobs of the environment and players saw mud as a new form of soil instead of the traditional dirt.
The new biome also introduced a new type of tree – the mangrove tree. The Minecraft mangrove trees quickly became unique due to their roots and their ability to grow underwater. In this guide, we will dive deep into what you need to know to grow mangrove trees.
Mangrove Swamp Biome
Before you learn how to grow mangrove trees in Minecraft, let’s first take a look at the biome.
Spawning Area

If you are trying to find a mangrove swamp biome, you should go to places that are considered warm regions. Mangrove swamps tend to generate near jungle biomes and desert biomes. If you are able to find one of these biomes, there is a chance that a mangrove swamp biome is near. You will know that you have found a mangrove swamp biome if the leaves of the mangrove trees and vines are a light-green tint, while the water has a teal and gray color.
Mangrove Mobs

Mangrove swamps are home to many different types of mobs and animals. The biome features frogs, tadpoles, glow squids, tropical fish, and even bees in the wildlife. Slimes often spawn in these biomes as well, making them great for farming slime balls.
Mangrove Swamp Environment

The environment of a mangrove swamp predominantly consists of mud instead of just dirt. The mud of the biome gives a unique feature to the already distinctive biome. Be careful when walking through the mud, because you will sink into the mud while walking on it.
Mangrove Trees

The only trees that are able to naturally generate in a mangrove swamp biome are mangrove trees.
Unlike other trees, Mangrove trees don’t drop their saplings. Instead, you can find the saplings growing on the trees. These saplings are called propagules and they resemble bright green rods that hang from the undersides of mangrove leaves.
Mangrove trees are also the only trees that have roots, making the tree look taller than most trees. Mangrove trees are also the only trees that can be grown underwater.
Growing Mangrove Trees
There are a few steps when it comes to growing your own mangrove tree.
Step #1: Finding a Mangrove Propagule

To find a mangrove propagule, explore the world until you encounter a mangrove swamp biome. When you do find one, you can also find propagules growing on the mangrove leaves.
Step #2: Finding a Place to Grow

Mangrove trees are able to grow in any biome, but they are limited to the types of blocks that they can grow on. If you are trying to grow a mangrove tree, make sure you plant the propagule on any normal dirt, grass, or mud type blocks.
Step #3: Clearing Space for the Propagule

Once you have found a block to place your propagule on, clear the area so that there is a clear space of 5×5 blocks for the sapling to grow. The maximum size that mangrove trees can grow to is 13x13x18 blocks.
Step #4: Plant your Propagule

After clearing the space, plant your propagule on the ground. The plant will take around one in-game day to grow, so if it doesn’t grow after one day, there is a chance that you didn’t clear enough space for it.
Another option is to use bone meal to speed up the growing process. Bone meal will help accelerate the growth, allowing you to see your fully grown tree instantly.
After your tree has finished growing, it should look something like this:

Other Notes
Note #1:
Propagules are still able to grow even if they are fully submerged underwater.

Once they are fully grown, the mangrove roots will also be more submerged underwater.

If you grow the mangrove tree on mud, the roots will become muddy mangrove roots with the roots becoming a different texture compared to non-muddy roots.
Note #2:

The wood of the mangrove trees is red, giving players another color of wood to build and create with.
