As a game, Minecraft can fall into a lot of genres. From adventure to farming simulation, you can take on various paths within the game. But Minecraft also delves into the dark side, having some horror aspects to it with its mobs such as the Creeper, Warden, and recently, the Creaking. If those aren’t enough for you, you may want to consider adding a hair-raising entity to the game, which is the popular Cave Dweller Mod.
Known to many mod players, the Cave Dweller brings an extra layer of spookiness to the game with its shadowy figure. You’ll be on the edge of your seat when encountering this complex entity in your Minecraft world.
Whether you’re a builder or adventurer, the Cave Dweller mod surely will entertain you with its dark presence. If you’re set on experiencing this creature, we’ve gathered all the information you need about this mod, creative uses for it, and how to install it.
What is the Cave Dweller in Minecraft?
The Cave Dweller Mod revolves around the Cave Dweller, a shadowy, human-like creature that stalks players within Minecraft’s cave systems. They’re known for their stealthy movements that can sneak up on you out of nowhere and suddenly attack you.

This mod works alongside Minecraft’s iconic and creepy cave sounds. So, as you continue exploring the caves and have closer encounters with this monster, the cave sounds will become more intense. It makes venturing into Minecraft’s vast cave systems more thrilling.
Currently, the Cave Dweller entity can be added to Minecraft as an add-on from the Minecraft Marketplace. This is an official add-on from the creator of the mod himself, Gargin and XP Games. But if you want to download it as a mod on its own, it’s available on CurseForge.
Where can you get the Cave Dweller mod for Minecraft?
There are several iterations of the Cave Dweller Mod. As mentioned earlier, you can get the original add-on or mod from the Minecraft Marketplace by XP Games.

There’s also the original Cave Dweller mod on CurseForge by Gargin himself. Both of these have previews of what the mod looks like in action.

Besides the official Cave Dweller mod iterations, there are other versions of this entity you can find online. Be sure to review each variation of this mod thoroughly before proceeding to install it.
There’s the Cave Dweller Evolved for Bedrock published by IceKIngA121 on PlanetMinecraft. In this version of the mod that’s specifically made for Bedrock, it has more configurable behavior and it will work in Multiplayer Mode.

Besides that mod, there’s also the Better Cave Dweller mod by 8bitmika. This combines different mods into one such as the Enhanced Cave Noise by Schpalrbo, the Cave Dweller mod made by SiverDX, and a resource pack called Cave Dweller Sound Overhaul made by Scorchy.

This improved mod variant gives the Cave Dweller a more terrifying look, better animations, and noises.
What features are included in the Cave Dweller Minecraft mod?
The Cave Dweller mod made by Gargin has a couple of different behaviors that are programmed into it. These all act upon different conditions and have various animations that come with it.

First, of course, is the mod’s staring behavior. The staring behavior happens when you happen to look at the creature. It can look at you eerily for a few seconds, generating a creepy atmosphere.
This then leads to the entity’s chasing behavior as it will start chasing you once the conditions for it to chase you are met. Unlike mobs such as the Enderman and Zombies who can’t get into one-block high spaces, the Cave Dweller can do so, adding some adrenaline rush when you’re fleeing from it.
Then there’s the running behavior of the Cave Dweller. The Cave Dweller can run and somehow crawl when it comes after you. Its speed is comparable to the Enderman and it makes it difficult for players to simply navigate an area with much thought when a monster like this is catching you.
Creative Uses for the Cave Dweller Mod
Knowing a bit more about the Cave Dweller mod, there are a lot of things you can do with the mod. You’ll be able to craft unique experiences with your friends by adding it to your world.
Adventure maps
Mainly, the Cave Dweller can be added to create custom adventure maps. You can use the creature as a boss in themed dungeons you plan to build. Additionally, you can create survival challenges wherein you and your friends should avoid or defeat the Cave Dwellers.
Horror-themed builds
Next are horror-themed builds. You can create eerie abandoned Mineshafts underground where Cave Dwellers can roam around. Another option is to build dark sanctuaries such as underground ruins that can serve as nests for your Cave Dwellers.
Roleplaying with friends

Once the Cave Dweller add-on finishes downloading, you can then add this by clicking on the “Activate” button to add the pack.
CurseForge
On CurseForge, you’ll need to install Geckolib first. This is an animation engine that lets you run mods with complex animations. You can find and install Geckolib on CurseForge as well.

Ensure that you also have a mod loader, such as Forge or Fabric. This ensures that your mods will load properly. Forge is used in this example.

After downloading the Cave Dweller “.jar” file and having your mod loader and Geckolib ready, open your Minecraft Launcher.

Afterwards, select your mod load on the profile you’ve installed. Then, click on the “Installations” tab on the launcher and click the folder icon to open your Minecraft game’s file directory.

Find the mods folder within the directory and open it.

You can then add your Cave Dweller and Geckolib’s jar files into the mods folder and relaunch Minecraft.

The Cave Dweller will then spawn when you’re in an open cave.

When installing via CurseForge, be sure that the mods you’re downloading and the version of the game you have are all the same. This means that if the version 1.19.3 of the Cave Dweller is what you’ve downloaded, you must have the same version for Geckolib, Forge, and Minecraft.
