Every time there’s a new mob in Minecraft, the player base hunts to discover everything they can about the world’s new creature.
One of the game’s more recent mobs is the Sniffer — an ancient creature used for digging around the ground to find seeds.
If you’re curious about how to find the Sniffer, as well as how it will benefit you, this guide has you covered.
What Is The Sniffer In Minecraft?
The Sniffer is one of the newer Minecraft mobs, having been introduced in Minecraft update 1.20 after winning the 2022 mob vote.
With its bright yellow face and tree-styled body, a Sniffer looks a bit like a giant, oddly colored turtle.

These mobs differ from other creatures you’ll find in your Minecraft world, as they don’t spawn naturally and are relatively passive overall.
What Does The Sniffer Do In Minecraft?
As mentioned, the Sniffer is a passive mob in the same vein as a bat or a frog. It mainly roams around without much of a mission, though the mob does have a use in your Minecraft world.
While it’s exploring, the Sniffer will, well, sniff the ground a bit. If you notice it doing so, pay attention, as it’s going to find some rare seeds.
That’s right. The Sniffer’s sniffing digs up either a Torchflower Seed or a Pitcher Pod.

A Sniffer is the only way to get either of these ancient seeds, which you can plant to grow into unique decorative plants.
You’ll want to place Sniffers in a safe space, as they can only sniff when avoiding hazards. If they’re in a stressful space, they will not sniff.
Ancient Seeds in Minecraft
Torchflower Seeds
Torchflower Seeds grow on farmland, similar to Wheat Seeds. Once grown, you can harvest the Torchflower and place it around your world.

However, note that harvesting the Torchflower does not result in additional Torchflower Seeds, meaning you need a Sniffer to find one again.
Pitcher Pod
The Pitcher Pod also grows on normal farmland, eventually turning into a Pitcher Plant.

This multi-colored beauty is the more coveted of Minecraft’s rare seeds for pretty self-explanatory reasons.
Just like the Torchflower, a Pitcher Plant will not drop additional seeds. Instead, you need to send a Sniffer sniffing again to find more.
The Sniffer has around an eight-minute cooldown before it can dig again.
It’s best to let Sniffers wander aimlessly, returning to them from time to time to acquire more ancient seeds.

Also, a Sniffer cannot dig on Mycelium. That said, it can dig on most other blocks, such as Dirt, Podzol, or Muddy Mangrove Roots.
How Do I Get A Sniffer In Minecraft?
We’ve already mentioned that the Sniffer does not spawn naturally. This is because it’s an ancient mob.
As a result, you must find a Sniffer Egg.

But before setting off on your adventure, be sure to create a Brush, requiring just one Feather, one Copper Ingot, and a Stick.

How to find a Sniffer Egg
Sniffer Eggs are quite rare and can be discovered only in Warm Ocean Ruins, which are underwater structures of the cold or warm variety.
These two varieties are why clarifying the “warm” modifier is essential.
Warm Ocean Ruins
To discover this ruin type, you must explore underwater in a warmer biome, such as the normal ocean biome.
It’s crucial to search here and not in a frozen ocean, as that will result in the Cold Ocean alternative.

Upon discovering these ruins, you must find a patch of Suspicious Sand. Within Suspicious Sand, you’ll sometimes discover a Sniffer Egg block.

That said, you won’t find Sniffer Eggs by breaking Suspicious Sand. Instead, you must brush sand using the Brush item. Be careful when searching, as Suspicious Sand breaks from a single hit.

After brushing enough Suspicious Sand, you’ll uncover a Sniffer Egg.
How to Hatch Sniffer Eggs
After acquiring a Sniffer Egg, you’ll want it to hatch into a baby Sniffer, otherwise known as a Snifflet.
You can place Sniffer Eggs anywhere around your base, and they should hatch after a little while.
That said, if you have a Moss Block, you can place the Egg onto it for a faster hatching process.

After about twenty minutes, the Egg will hatch into a baby Sniffer. A Moss Block will cut that time in half to ten minutes.
What Does A Baby Sniffer Do?
The baby version of the Sniffer will grow into an adult Sniffer after two in-game days.
It won’t do much as a baby, simply existing as even more of a passive mob than its adult form.

Once the baby turns into an adult, it will search for ancient seeds as described above.
How Do Sniffers Breed?
Two adult Sniffers breed when given Torchflower Seeds, producing a new mob in the Snifflet.
Though, unlike other animals, the Snifflet doesn’t come out as a living creature.
It comes out as a Sniffer Egg, just like its parents did. You’ll have to rinse and repeat the egg-hatching process here.

The adult Sniffer can breed every five minutes. Having an army of Sniffers searching around the ground will result in all sorts of unique plants.
Now that you know everything there is to know about the Sniffer, why not try to find one with your friends?
