Minecraft Floating Island: Everything You Need To Know

Minecraft’s world generation is an untameable beast. It can produce endless oceans, towering mountains, or a simple plain. However, something the world’s generation struggles to produce is a floating island. In this case, you may need to get your hands dirty.

This article details everything you need to know about floating islands in Minecraft, including why you would want a floating island, what you can do with them, and how to create them yourself.

What Is A Minecraft Floating Island?

A floating island in Minecraft is precisely what it sounds like — an isolated set of land hovering over the rest of the world.

What’s fun is that you can make floating islands over water, mountains, or anywhere else your heart desires.

As for why you’d build floating islands, well, there are a few reasons.

A Nice View

If your Minecraft world generation produced a particularly gorgeous universe to explore, it’s natural that you’d want a pretty good view of it.

Sometimes the terrain generation creates an island that floats above the surface.

Floating islands, naturally, hover off of the ground. As a result, they provide a better view than most other spots in your Minecraft world. This isn’t to mention that you can build an island anywhere, giving yourself complete control over your preferred view.

For Protection

Most bases require a big wall for protection. While a wall is great in theory, it’s an expensive and time-consuming project, depending on your base’s size.

This wall is nice, but time-consuming to make.

Instead of building a wall, a floating island provides you with natural protection from Minecraft’s dangers. You should have no trouble fending off baddies if you build the island high enough and light it up properly.

For The Challenge

Some players participate in something called the Skyblock challenge. This challenge involves you spawning on a floating island and trying to expand from there.

Spawn with a chest, a tree, and some grass.

The Skyblock challenge tests your knowledge of Minecraft, as there’s no easy access to mines, oceans, forests, or other areas that generate natural resources. Instead, you must get creative with what you’re provided, resulting in the ultimate Minecraft trial.

How To Make Floating Islands

You can take various approaches when building floating islands, but let’s start with the simplest one.

Build a 1×1 tower as high as you’d like, and expand the island from there. If you’re doing this in Survival Mode, make sure to bring a few sets of blocks to build the island out as far as you’d like. Of course, you have unlimited block options if you’re in Creative Mode.

Otherwise, you can hollow out a peninsula and make it a floating island, assuming you like how it looks when attached to a more significant landmass. This can take a while, but it gives you a template to work off of rather than create from scratch.

Detach this spot from the mainland to make it a floating island.

If you want a mix of floating islands, you can choose to create multiple little ones that connect via a bridge. Maybe start by hollowing out an isle that’s attached to a greater landmass and build smaller floating islands around it via the 1×1 tower method.

What’s great about Minecraft is you’re only limited by your imagination. These are just foundational ideas regarding a floating island. Maybe you can generate your ideas with a lava and water bucket or by using TNT creatively.

Finally, you can use the world generation tab to create a biome with islands.

The world generation creates a ton of miniature islands you can expand upon.

To do this, create a New World and head to the World tab. Switch your World Type to Single Biome, then click Customize. From there, scroll to Small End Islands, select it, then create the new world.

The Small End Islands biome generates smaller islands for you to work with.

Afterward, you can remove the parts of the islands that are touching the water and expand upon them to create floating islands.

How To Download Floating Islands

If you don’t want to make your own floating islands, you can also download some pre-made ones from various world-uploading websites.

One good website for floating islands is skyblock.net. This website features many different versions of the Skyblock challenge.

Here’s how to download from it.

1. Head To Skyblock.net

The website details everything you need to know about Skyblock.

The Skyblock page includes the project's updates, downloads, and more.

2. Navigate To Downloads

Go to Downloads via the navbar.

Downloads will take you to the list of worlds.

3. Find An Island To Download

Choose between the available Skyblock islands. Then click Download Skyblock.

Download the world of your choice.

4. Click Download

When you’re on the world’s download page, click Download. Then, choose (or create) a folder to save the world to.

The download button will open your Windows file manager.

5. Open Run

Open Run by pressing the Windows Key + R.

6. Type %appdata%

Type %appdata% in the box, then click OK.

This takes you to a hidden folder in your PC.

7. Open The .minecraft Folder

Open the .minecraft folder.

This folder houses all of the Minecraft game data.

8. Open The Saves Folder

Find the Saves folder within .minecraft

The Saves folder will show all of your current worlds.

9. Place The Skyblock Folder in Saves

Place the downloaded Skyblock world folder in the Saves folder.

The Skyblock folder will show the world version name.

From there, the world should show up in your worlds list.

No matter your method, creating floating islands is a complex, time-consuming task. Why not try to create them with your friends rather than alone?
