Enchanting items in Minecraft is a vital part of the experience — especially as you get closer to the end-game challenges like the Ender Dragon.
However, Enchanting is a bit confusing at times. Also, you’re rarely guaranteed to get the Enchantments (also known as Enchants) you truly want. In this case, you may want to remove Enchantments and apply some new ones. If that’s the case, we’ve got you covered.
This guide will detail everything you need to know about how to remove Enchantments in Minecraft, including how to Disenchant Armor, how to remove Enchants from Weapons, and everything in between.
How To Remove Enchantments Minecraft Has To Offer
The way to remove Enchantments, a process also called Disenchanting, is actually relatively simple.
To start, you need to build a Grindstone.
A Grindstone is used to repair regular items and fix durability, but it can also remove Enchantments and provide you with XP based on which ones it gets rid of.
How To Craft A Grindstone
You can craft a Grindstone by combining two Sticks, a Stone Slab, and two Wooden Planks as follows:
From there, place the Grindstone adjacent to a block to begin the Disenchant operation.
You’ll need the Enchanted Item you want to Disenchant, such as a Sword.
Place the item with Enchantments into one of the two Grindstone slots under Repair & Disenchant.
Next, a Disenchanted version of that item will appear in the slot on the right. If you drag it to your inventory, you’ll receive the unenchanted version and some experience points. This item should have the same durability as the previously Enchanted item, with the only difference being the lack of Enchantments.
Removing Enchantments results in a random amount of XP points, depending on the level of those Enchantments, such as Smite III vs. Smite II, and how many Enchantments were on the item. Hope for the best, here!
Also, the Grindstone cannot remove a curse. There are two curses in Minecraft:
Curse of Binding
Equipment with this Enchantment becomes impossible to remove. The only way to remove this piece is to die with it on or for it to break.
Curse of Vanishing
Gear with this Enchantment will disappear if you die while wearing or holding it.
It’s also worth noting that removing an Enchantment will not get rid of an item’s custom name if it has one.
As for the other way to remove Enchantments, you can place the item you want to Disenchant into a Crafting Table alongside another item of the same kind.
For instance, you can remove a Diamond Sword with Knockback by placing it on the Crafting Table with another, normal Diamond Sword. This will both remove Enchantments and restore the item’s hit points.
