What is the Minecraft Spear?

As briefly mentioned earlier, the Minecraft Spear is the newest weapon added to Minecraft as based on the official Minecraft blog about Minecraft Snapshot 25w41A. In terms of details, the Spear is somewhat shaped like an Arrow and Trident with its pointed tip, but long and handheld handle. Additionally, the Spear also has variations in crafting materials such as Wood, Stone, Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite, just like the usual Minecraft weapons.

In line with the various materials players can use to craft the Spear, each material has different stats for timing, influencing how fast a player can use the Spear. Besides that, there’s a minimum reach for damage. This means that if you’re too close to a target, the damage dealt will be less. While you deal damage more if you’re farther.
As you’re able to wield a Spear, be wary that mobs can also spawn using Spears to attack you. Zombies, Husks, Piglins, Zombie Horses with Horsemen, and Zombified Piglins can generate with the Spear as their weapon. The Overworld mobs of Zombies, Husks, and Zombie Horses can wield Iron Spears. Then the Nether mobs will spawn with Golden Spears.
How do I use the Spear in Minecraft?
What makes the Spear unique is that it offers two different types of attacks players can use. Try out these two different attacks and see how they can affect your playstyle.
Jab Attack

First off is the Jab Attack. This attack position uses the quick-press primary action button in Minecraft. So your attack deals a low damage attack with a Knockback effect. Keep in mind that there are also cooldowns between two attacks.
Another important thing to note about the Jab Attack is that its effectiveness depends on the material the Spear is made of. If you have a Wooden Spear, it has the fastest cooldown between attacks. However, if you use the Netherite Spear, the cooldown is slowest.
Charge Attack

Next is the Charge Attack. You will press and hold the secondary action button to use this. Like the Jab Attack, this attack’s damage is based on your Spear’s material. However, it is also dependent on the player’s view angle and the velocity of both the player and the target. There are three stages to the Charge Attack:
Engaged

When in this stage, the Spear you hold can do some damage, knock back enemies, and even dismount mounted enemies. However, this can only happen if your speed is above the required thresholds.
Tired

In this next stage, you’ll find your Spear rotating towards a vertical position and producing some shaking. You can still deal damage and knockback enemies, but you won’t be able to dismount mounted enemies.
Disengaged

Then we have the Disengaged stage, wherein your Spear is lowered and pointed downwards. You can bring out damage, but knockback or dismounting enemies is possible.
The Spear can perform a Charge Attack when the Jab Attack is on cooldown. So, if you alternate between these two attacks, your attack rate can be doubled.

While players can mainly exhibit these two attacks for the Spear, you should also be wary, as mobs like the Zombies, Husks, and Zombified Piglins can charge at you with a Spear.
How do I find a Spear in Minecraft?
As you’ve learned the basic information about Minecraft Spears and how they work in terms of their attacks, it’s time to learn how to loot and find them. As briefly mentioned earlier, Zombies, Husks, and Zombie Horsemen can all spawn armed with Iron Spears.

If you’re in the early game and want to avoid heading straight into battle with mobs, you also have the option to loot for Spears across different structures in Minecraft. Mainly, you can find Copper Spears in Villages, Stone Spears in Underwater Ruins, Iron Spears in Buried Treasure and Villages, Diamond Spears in Bastion Remnants, and End City Chests.

How do I craft a Spear in Minecraft?
If you’re too excited to look for Spears, then you should consider crafting a Spear. The crafting recipe for Spears is easy to follow and only requires minimal materials. A staple is having two sticks and then your chosen material to go on the Spear’s tip.
You can start off with a Wooden Spear made with two sticks and one block of Planks. The sticks are positioned diagonally on the Crafting Table.

Similarly, you can do this for Copper Spears or Diamond Spears, as you can apply their Ingots in the same position as the Planks earlier.

What can I enchant the Minecraft Spear with?
Just like other weapons, the Minecraft Spear can also be enchanted. Either with an Anvil or an Enchanting Table, you can add a variety of enchantments to the Spear. Enchantments can enhance the performance of your Spear in combat, exploration, or both.
Here’s a breakdown of the enchantments you can apply to the Spear:
- Sharpness
- Smite
- Lunge
- Looting
- Mending
- Unbreaking
- Fire Aspect
- Bane of Arthropods
- Curse of Vanishing
The right combination of enchantments can majorly impact your Spear’s damage output, durability, and versatility, allowing you to have a flexible weapon in your hands. For instance, Sharpness + Unbreaking + Looting can make an all-rounder setup for usual mob combat. However, Smite + Fire Aspect is more effective when doing cave raids.
Lunge Enchantment
We’ll be diving deeper into the Lunge enchantment since this is an exclusive enchantment only applicable to the Spear.

The Lunge enchantment works with the Jab Attack. It basically propels the user horizontally according to their view direction. However, the Spear wielder with the enchantment will exhaust significant durability every time they use the Jab Attack. It’s recommended to have an enchantment like Unbreaking or Mending so that you won’t use up the durability of your Spear from using Lunge repeatedly.

You can gain distance with the Lunge when you’re facing directly horizontal when attempting to do the Lunge. If you’re in a vertical position, however, the Lunge’s momentum boost gets canceled out. Additionally, you won’t be able to use the Lunge if you’re riding a mount, gliding with the Elytra, or you’re in a body of water.
Mastering the Minecraft Spear takes more than just spamming it. It’s about learning how to use its hybrid mechanics effectively. You can use its extended reach to keep mobs at bay while still dealing strong melee damage. Use the different attacks to safely attack enemies like Creepers or Skeletons without taking hits yourself.
It’s crucial to tailor your enchantments and combat strategy with the Spear. Have a shield on-hand for a balanced offense and defense strategy, and focus on enchantments like Sharpness, Lunge, and Unbreaking for damage and durability. With practice and the right setup, the Spear in Minecraft will certainly lead you to a fruitful survival experience in the game.
