In Minecraft, players can choose how they want to travel throughout the world, whether by foot, boat, or even on horses. No method, however, can beat the method of flying. Being able to fly around anywhere in the world gives you a lot of freedom to do as you please and go wherever you want.
Flying is also essential if you want to be able to get things done more efficiently. Depending on the game mode you choose to play on, there are different methods to help you fly. If you are in creative mode, you only need to click buttons, while survival mode requires an item.
In this guide, we will teach you how to fly in each different mode with step-by-step instructions. Get ready to spread your wings and enjoy Minecraft at a faster pace.
How to Fly
Before we teach you how to fly in Minecraft, you must first know what game mode you are playing in. There is a difference in how you can fly when it comes to creative, spectator, and survival mode. The game mode of your world is whatever mode you set it to when you created your new world. You can also tell what game mode you are playing by looking at the list of your worlds. The mode will be under the name of the world.

Alternatively, if you allowed cheats and commands for your world, you can type commands in the chat to switch modes.
- To Enter Creative Mode: /gamemode creative
- To Enter Survival Mode: /gamemode survival
- To Enter Spectator Mode: /gamemode spectator
Creative Mode
In creative mode, you are the creator or god of the world, meaning you can do whatever you want. This also means that you are allowed to fly freely however you want. You don’t have to worry about taking fall damage in creative mode, because you are invincible. To start flying in creative mode, double-tap your jump button (default space bar) quickly. This activates your fly mode in creative.
Before Flying Mode is Activated:

After Flying Mode is Activated:

Flying Higher:
To fly higher or up in creative mode, hold down your jump key. When you hold down the jump input, you will start levitating up in the air more.
Flying Lower:
To fly down in creative mode, hold down your crouch key. The default crouch key is the left shift key. When you hold down the crouch input, you will start descending from the air.
Moving Forward:
To move forward in creative mode, press your up key, which by default should be the ‘W’ key.
Moving Backward:
To move backwards in creative mode, press your down key, which by default should be the ‘S’ key.
Moving Left:
To move left in creative mode, press your left key, which by default should be the ‘A’ key.
Moving Right:
To move right in creative mode, press your right key, which by default should be the ‘D’ key.
Sprinting:
To move faster and sprint in creative mode, press your ‘Left Control’ key once or double tap your up key.
Stop Flying:
To stop flying, you can either double tap your jump key which will immediately deactivate your flying and drop you from mid-air, or you can hold your crouch key until you hit the ground. Once you touch the ground, your flying will be deactivated.
Survival Mode
Flying in survival mode is more complicated than creative mode flying. To start flying, you have to obtain an elytra and craft some fireworks. Unfortunately, you cannot craft an elytra in Minecraft, however, you are able to find it. Below are step by step instructions on how you can obtain an elytra and how you can use it.
Finding an Elytra
Step #1: Beating the Ender dragon
The first step to obtaining an Elytra is a pretty hard one. You will need to first go to the end and defeat the ender dragon.

After you have defeated the ender dragon, two portals will spawn. The first portal is the portal that will take you home; the second portal is the end city portal. Locate the end city portal.

Step #2: Going into the End City Portal
The end city portal is a 1×1 portal with bedrock surrounding it, meaning you can’t go in it by just walking into it. Instead, you are going to need an ender pearl. Luckily, you are in the end, so even if you don’t have one, you can kill an enderman to get one. Once you have your ender pearl, throw the pearl into the portal and you should be teleported to the end city.

Step #3: Locating an End City
Once you have finished teleporting, start making your way to the end islands by either bridging or using an ender pearl. If you’re lucky, you might spawn on one of the islands without needing to bridge. Once you have reached an island, run around until you find an end ship. Keep in mind that end ships are hard to find, so you might be running around and hopping from island to island for a while.

Step #4: Enter the End Ship
Once you have located the end ship, build up using blocks, and enter the ship. Go down the staircases and enter a small chamber. You will find the elytra in an item frame behind a shulker that is guarding it.

Step #5: Collect the Elytra
While defeating the shulker is optional, you should still kill it to make collecting the elytra a lot easier. Once you have defeated the shulker, go up to the item frame and left-click it. The elytra should pop off the item frame, allowing you to collect it.

Crafting Fireworks
The function of an elytra is to help you glide in the air, but it doesn’t allow you to fly freely as you want. Instead, you are going to need to combine elytra with firework rockets. To craft a firework rocket, you are going to need:
- 1x Paper
- 1x Gunpowder
You can get paper by placing three sugar canes on the crafting table and you can get gunpowder by killing creepers. Once you have collected the items, place the paper and gunpowder onto the crafting table in any pattern you like.

Using Elytra and Fireworks
Before you start flying, equip your elytra into your armor chest slot.

To start flying with an elytra, you will need to jump from a high place. Then, press your jump button to activate your elytra. Your wings should then spread, allowing you to glide through the air. If you don’t press your jump button, you will end up falling onto the ground.

Elytra doesn’t give you permanent flight and you will eventually end up on the ground after a while. To continue flying, look up and hold your fireworks in your hands and right-click. You can tell that you’ve used a firework because of the trail behind you. This will propel you upwards, giving you momentum and allowing you to continue gliding for a longer amount of time.

As long as you don’t use up your fireworks, you will be able to keep flying however long you want. You can even start flying without needing to fall from a high place if you have fireworks. To do this, jump once and then press your jump button again quickly to activate your elytra. Once activated, quickly right-click your fireworks while looking up to propel you into the sky.

Be careful when flying because crashing into walls, buildings, or blocks at a high speed will result in you taking damage or possibly even dying.
Now that you know how to fly in Minecraft, get out there and find your own elytra. Equip your elytra, spread your wings, and experience the world from a higher perspective. If you still don’t understand, check out this YouTube tutorial by Eyecraftmc on how to use the elytra.
