The introduction of Minecraft’s 1.17 Caves & Cliffs: Part I update gave us a new look at the newly added mob – axolotl. These real-life, critically endangered amphibians are also very rare to find in Minecraft as they only spawn in a certain biome.
Axolotls are peaceful creatures that don’t do much. However, they spawn with different types of colors, making them fun animals to collect and display. These cute and adorable salamander creatures are sure to lighten up your house.
Wild axolotls that are naturally generated in Minecraft can spawn in four different colors: leucistic, wild, gold, and cyan. However, there is one variant of axolotl that cannot spawn naturally. In this guide, we will teach you how you can find the rarest axolotl in Minecraft.
Axolotl

While axolotls are peaceful creatures, they tend to attack other aquatic mobs aside from turtles, dolphins, frogs, and other axolotls. So when you put them in their home, make sure there are no fish near them, as the axolotls will attack them.
Axolotls spawn naturally in only one biome – the lush caves. These caves can be found at any altitude underground and have a unique feature of azalea leaves and trees. Lush cave biomes tend to generate in places with high humidity, so if you want a higher chance of finding a lush cave, try digging under any of these biomes:
- Swamps
- Dark forests
- Jungles
- Old-growth taigas
- Wooded badlands
- Windswept hills
Biomes such as the dark forest, old growth taiga, and bamboo jungles have the highest chance of generating a lush cave biome underneath them.
Another condition for the axolotls to spawn naturally is that they have to spawn underwater in lush cave biomes and that there needs to be a clay block less than five spaces below the spawning space.

Axolotls can have a total of five colors. Below are the spawn rates of each axolotl variant and the command you need to spawn them if you enable cheats:
Lucy (Leucistic)

Lucy axolotls are known for their pinkish-colored skin. If you are in creative mode and use an axolotl spawn egg, there is a 25% chance it will be the lucy variant. To spawn them with command, type ‘/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:5}’.
Wild

Wild axolotls have brown skin. If you are in creative mode and use an axolotl spawn egg, there is a 25% chance it will be the wild variant. To spawn them with command, type ‘/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:1}’.
Gold

Gold axolotls have yellow skin. If you are in creative mode and use an axolotl spawn egg, there is a 25% chance it will be the gold variant. To spawn them with command, type ‘/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:2}’.
Cyan

Cyan axolotls have light-blue skin with pink gills. If you are in creative mode and use an axolotl spawn egg, there is a 25% chance it will be the cyan variant. To spawn them with command, type ‘/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:3}’.
Blue

Blue axolotls are the rarest variant of axolotl and aren’t able to be generated by the world naturally. There are only two methods of spawning them – either breeding or using cheats. It is impossible to spawn blue axolotls with an axolotl spawn egg. To spawn them with command, type ‘/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:4}’.
Breeding
How to Breed

Axolotls tend to eat tropical fish. If you have a bucket of tropical fish, the axolotls will follow you. You will need these buckets of tropical fish to breed the axolotls. To find tropical fish, you will need to venture to humid biomes like:
- Lukewarm oceans
- Mangrove swamps
- Lush caves
Here are the steps to breeding axolotls:
Step #1
Craft a bucket and fill it with water. To craft a bucket you will need three iron ingots and put them in the crafting table in this pattern:

Next, find a water source and right-click it with the empty bucket.
Step #2
Find tropical fish and right-click on a fish with the water bucket. You should now have a bucket of tropical fish.

Step #3
Once you have two buckets of tropical fish, find two axolotls. Right-click each axolotl with a bucket of tropical fish and they should then start breeding.

Breeding Odds
If you are playing in survival mode, breeding axolotls is the only way to spawn blue axolotls naturally. When you breed axolotls with each other, there is a 49.585% chance that it will be the color of one of the adult axolotl. For example, if you breed a lucy axolotl with a wild axolotl, there is a 49.585% chance the baby axolotl will be the lucy variant or wild variant when born. If you breed two axolotls of the same variant together, there is a 99.17% chance that the baby will be the same variant as the adult axolotls.

This also means that there is a 0.083% chance that the breeding will spawn a blue axolotl. Statistically, this means you will need to breed axolotls approximately 1,200 times before you spawn a blue axolotl.
If you are able to spawn a rare blue axolotl, the chances of breeding a blue axolotl increases to 49.585%. Once you are able to breed two rare blue axolotls, the chances of spawning blue axolotls by breeding increases to 100%.

Once you are able to spawn two blue axolotls, you are set in terms of how many rare blue axolotls you want. Remember that after breeding, it will take 5 minutes before the axolotls can breed again, so the process might take longer.
Conclusion
Now that you know how to find and breed the rarest axolotl in Minecraft, turn on the game and try it for yourself. Axolotls make for adorable pets and also great underwater defenders. Their different color variants also make them amazing creatures to watch and display. If you need more help, check out this guide on YouTube.
