There is no shortage of stone no matter where you go in Minecraft. Even if you are in the most barren of deserts, you can dig up sand to eventually find some stone hidden underneath. While you can easily break those blocks down to get cobblestone, there are other stone aesthetics you can go for with your various building schemes. Smooth stone is a popular avenue for some to go down.
With as much utility that various blocks in Minecraft have, you might not be surprised to hear that some merely play the role of decoration. In the case of smooth stone, that is mostly the case. Here is how to get your hands on some smooth stone.
How to make smooth stone in Minecraft
While many items that you make in Minecraft require a crafting recipe, that is not the case with smooth stone. You can not craft smooth stone. Instead, the smooth stone recipe is handled by smelting stone in a furnace. Place the stone in the top slot with any kind of fuel in the bottom (coal, charcoal, wood, lava bucket, etc.). Wait for the arrow to fill up, and your smooth stone will be placed in the slot on the right. Move it to your inventory.
If you have sandstone in your inventory from a desert, you can also make smooth sandstone in the same way. It is similar to regular smooth stone but obviously holds a closer resemblance to the sandy blocks.
Where to find smooth stone in Minecraft
While most situations will require you to make your own smooth stone, there is an opportunity to find some already generated in your Minecraft world. If you come across a village in either a plains, savanna, or snowy plains biome, look for a butcher’s house and you can find smooth stone blocks or slabs. Trail ruins also have a chance to generate smooth stones. When you find them, be sure to break them down with a pickaxe. Unlike regular stone, smooth stone will not drop as cobblestone when you mine it.
What to do with smooth stone in Minecraft?
When you have your smooth stone in hand, there are a couple of things you can make with it. First, you can make an upgraded furnace, called a blast furnace. For this item, you need three smooth stones, five iron ingots, and one furnace. The crafting recipe requires you to put the furnace in the center, the smooth stone across the three bottom slots, and the iron ingots in the other areas.
When you have a blast furnace, you can use it to smelt ores and metals in half of the time of the regular furnace. Unfortunately, though, it can not be used for other kinds of items.
Additionally, you can also make smooth stone slabs. If using a crafting table, put three smooth stone blocks in the bottom slots to make six slabs.
If you have a stonecutter available, you can use one smooth stone block to make two slabs.
Whether you have smooth stone blocks or smooth stone slabs, the main purpose of them is to be used for building structures. Slabs take up half a block when placed, so you can use them to create steps, even though there are no smooth stone stair items in the game.
Regular smooth stone blocks are great for building houses. As mentioned above, when you break smooth stone down with a pickaxe, it doesn’t drop cobblestone-like regular stone does. This means you can remove and replace them indefinitely without needing to smelt them again to replenish your supply. Not only does it save you time, but it saves you coal, charcoal, and other fuels that you might expend to keep your furnace running.
