My Hermes agent is going to help me improve my workplace setup. I want a used standing desk in Charlotte without refreshing Craigslist every afternoon for the best deal.
When I looked on Monday, October 5, 2026, there were a handful of matches around the metro under $100, including a $65 industrial style desk in Mooresville posted that morning that my aent found.
In this walkthrough I ask Hermes to watch Charlotte Craigslist for a standing desk under $50 within about 25 miles of ZIP 28202, check every few hours, and message me only when a new matching listing appears. It stays quiet on posts it already saw. It does not message sellers, post anything, or buy anything. When it pings, I open the link and decide.
Hermes is running on a NameHero VPS for this so it’s always watching Craigslist.
What we’re doing
We’re setting up a local listing watch: one Craigslist city, one search phrase, one max price, and a short list of posting IDs Hermes has already told you about. On each check it pulls the newest matching results, compares them to that list, and only messages you when something new under your max shows up.
If you read How To Use Hermes To Watch When Restaurant Reservations Open or How To Use Hermes To Watch Flight Prices And Alert You When They Drop, this is the same notify-only habit.
Craigslist is the primary source for this tutorial because you can search it without signing into anything. Facebook Marketplace is fine as an optional extra if you’re already signed in to Facebook on the box, but it is not required here.
What you’ll need
- Hermes already running on a NameHero VPS, with a working AI key so it can think. If you are still on the first hello, start with Your first conversation with Hermes. If the chat says it needs a brain, see Why does Hermes need a key from OpenAI or Anthropic?.
- Your city and search. Mine is Charlotte Craigslist, query “standing desk,” about 25 miles from ZIP 28202.
- A max price that matches what you actually see. Look once yourself first so the number is realistic.
- Somewhere for the ping to land: the Hermes dashboard, or Telegram or WhatsApp if you’ve connected one.
Ask Hermes first
Paste something like this into Hermes:
Watch Charlotte Craigslist (https://charlotte.craigslist.org/) for a used standing desk under $100 within about 25 miles of ZIP 28202. Check every 6 hours. When a NEW matching listing appears that you have not already told me about, message me right away with the title, price, location, and link. Stay quiet on listings you already saw. Do not message sellers, do not post, and do not buy. Notify only.
Walk through it
Here’s the Charlotte search I used. On Monday, October 5, 2026, with max price set to $100 and a 25 mile radius from 28202, the metro matches looked like this: a $65 industrial style standing desk in Mooresville (posted that morning), a $100 desk adapter in Denver, NC, a $55 Flexispot converter in Matthews, a $40 topper in Indian Land, a $90 walking pad listing in Kannapolis, another $40 converter in Matthews, and a $45 dual monitor stand in Fort Mill. Most of those sit between about $40 and $100. Without a max filter I also saw a $650 iMovR desk in Charlotte, so $100 is a deliberate ceiling for a bargain hunt, not a premium desk.

Two gotchas show up fast on Craigslist. First, listings go stale. A post from early September can still sit on the newest sort until someone takes it down, so a ping is a heads up to look, not a guarantee the item is still available when you arrive. Second, duplicates are common. The same $650 iMovR post showed up on October 4 and again on October 5 with different posting IDs, and a $350 riser was posted twice a minute apart. Tell Hermes to track posting IDs it already sent you, and stay quiet on re-seen ones. The Craigslist search UI even has a “hide duplicates” option for the same reason.
A couple of tips once it’s running. Be specific in the ask if you want a full electric desk only, not a desktop converter or a walking pad. Tighten the radius if you’re not driving to Mooresville. And when it pings, the next step is yours. Open the link, message the seller yourself if it still looks right, and meet in a public place.
What I learned
A Craigslist deal watch is a recurring check with a simple rule: this city, this search, under this price, tell me only when the listing is new. You set it up by asking Hermes in plain English, and it can use its listing monitor and scheduler to do the refreshing. The two things that trip people up are treating a stale post like a sure thing, and getting pinged twice on the same desk because the seller reposted it. Pick a realistic max from today’s results, ask for new posting IDs only, and go look yourself when it pings.
