Of all the wild items in Minecraft, few are as strange as the Ominous Bottle. As is its namesake, this item provides you the power to participate in Ominous events, which is something fairly new to the game.
This item can be a bit confusing, and you may be wondering how to get one and why it’s used. Fear not. The words following this paragraph will tell you everything you need to know about the Ominous Bottle, including how to nab one for your inventory and how to use it to acquire some serious loot.
What Is The Ominous Bottle In Minecraft?
The Ominous Bottle in Minecraft is quite similar to the game’s other Potions, such as the Potion of Weakness or the Potion of Regeneration.
Ominous Bottles exist from levels one to five. Higher level Ominous Bottles change how it affects you.

Drinking the Ominous Bottle while in the Overworld gives you the Bad Omen status effect for one hour and fourty minutes, which, despite its name, isn’t all bad.

Instead, it allows you to participate in Ominous Events if you enter specific areas. Let’s break those down.
Raid Omen
If you enter a Village while you have the Bad Omen effect applied to you, a Raid will trigger after thirty seconds.

A Raid is when waves of enemies attack the Village and its Villagers at a seemingly endless rate. Raids can consist of Illagers, Ravagers, Witches, and more. Even worse, those that spawn for the Raid will attract already-spawned enemies, forcing you to respond to threats even faster.

Some enemies will target Villagers specifically, breaking down Doors and entering to attack — behavior especially prominent in Java Edition.
To end a Raid Wave, you must kill the Raid Captain. When defeating a Raid Captain, as denoted by their Ominous Banner, other Raiders will try to grab the Banner and continue the Raid. You must stop them from doing so.
The amount of Raid Waves will vary based on your world difficulty. For example, Easy difficulty consists of three Waves, Normal difficulty consists of five Waves, and Hard difficulty consists of seven Waves.
If you have a Bad Omen of level two or higher, Raids will have an extra Wave. That said, higher levels of Bad Omen also increases the chance that Raiders will drop Enchanted weapons and armor.
You can only get rid of Raid Omens by drinking Milk via a Milk Bucket. To drink Milk, craft a Bucket using three Iron Ingots organized as follows in a Crafting Table:

Then, use the Bucket on a Cow to acquire Milk.
You can also use commands to get rid of the Raid Omen effect.
Beating the Raid provides you with the Hero of the Village status effect, which lasts for 40 minutes. This effect means Villagers will give you gifts and discounts on their wares. Higher levels of this effect results in bigger discounts. To receive a higher level Hero of the Village effect, beat the Raid with a higher level of the Bad Omen effect.

Note that Bedrock Edition players will not receive gifts. Only discounts.
Trial Omen
If you’ve been playing Minecraft recently, you’ve surely come across the game’s Tricky Trials Update. This update introduced hard-to-find Challenge Rooms that truly test your skills.

However, if you’re looking to really challenge yourself, enter a Trial with a Bad Omen effect. It will turn into a Trial Omen.

Any Trial Spawners you stand near with the Trial Omen applied will turn into Ominous Spawners.
As you may know, beating Trial Chambers requires you to defeat all of the enemies that spawn. Once defeated, the Spawner will drop loot.
The Trial Omen simply makes these Spawners harder to defeat, as they spawn more difficult enemies with Enchanted Armor alongside vicious projectiles that target you if you stand close.
This Ominous Trial will last longer depending on your Bad Omen level. A level one Bad Omen means you have fifteen minutes to beat the Ominous Trial. Higher level Bad Omen effects multiply that fifteen minutes by said level. For example, a level three Bad Omen level means 15 multiplied by three, or 45 minutes.
Of course, a bigger challenge means better rewards. Most notable here, however, is the Ominious Trial Key. Beating an Ominous Trial is the only way to obtain an Ominous Trial Key, which allows you to open the Ominous Vault.

Ominous Vaults have much rarer loot than traditional Vaults do, such as rare Smithing Templates, making them a worthy challenge to strive for.
How To Acquire The Ominous Bottle In Minecraft
As mentioned, the Ominous Bottle acts similar to many of the game’s Potions in that it applies a status effect after being used. You can craft most Potions through a Brewing Stand.
However, to date, there is no Ominous Bottle Minecraft crafting recipe. Instead, you must uncover the Bottle by defeating a Raid Captain outside of a Raid, meaning you have to find them while exploring your Minecraft world.
A Raid Captain looks like your typical Illager, only they have an Ominous Banner on their back. This makes them stand out from the rest, and targeting them shouldn’t be difficult.

A defeated Raid Captain will drop an Ominous Bottle of a random level out of its inventory. This means that for higher level Ominous Bottles, you must keep fighting Captains until a higher level one randomly drops.
There are two main ways to find these Captains outside of a Raid.
Pillager Outposts
Pillager Outposts are large towers full of Illagers, Pillagers, and similar ilk, alongside fences and gates for security. You’ll find them about while exploring Minecraft, and each one should have a few Captains for you to take down.

Patrols
Patrols are small groups of Captains and their Illager crew, roaming around in an attempt to defeat Villagers (or players). These group spawn locations are completely erratic, though you may find them attacking your base one fateful night.
