Minecraft is full of weapons. It’s got Bows, Axes, Tridents, Potions, and, of course, a Sword. This isn’t to mention the game’s many tools and other damage types.
But perhaps most interesting is the game’s newest weapon: the Mace. The Mace was introduced into Java Edition and Bedrock Edition with the Tricky Trials update alongside trial chambers, and the excitement is real.
This guide will cover everything you need to know about the Mace, including its different attack types, its compatible enchantments, and more.
What Is A Minecraft Mace?
The Minecraft Mace is one of the game’s newest weapons. Its powerful and multiple attack patterns make it unique amongst Minecraft’s other damage-dealing weapons.

While you can attack with it anytime, it’s a weapon that deals more damage based on fall height. For example, if you jump off of a tower to attack an enemy on the ground, it will do much more damage than if you attacked it upfront. No other weapon in the game functions this way. However, note that the Mace has the slowest attack speed in the game, making it slightly ineffective against something like Swords or an Axe.

The minimum fall distance required to use this “smash attack” is 1.5 blocks. On top of the weapon base damage, you’ll do an extra four hearts of damage per block for the first three blocks you fall, resulting in 12 hearts of extra damage. From there, you’ll do two extra damage for the following five blocks you fall and one extra damage for every block afterward.

There is no cap to this amount, meaning you can do massive damage by falling from great heights. Even better, the smash attack will mitigate fall damage so you don’t have to worry about falling from a high place.
Plus, landing a smash attack creates knockback, sending enemies flying away from you.
Almost every smash attack is a critical hit, which deals even more damage, and we haven’t even gotten into an Enchanted Mace.
Enchantments For Your Mace
You can apply multiple enchantments to a Mace, with a few of them exclusive to the weapon type.
Unbreaking
The Unbreaking enchantment can minimize the durability damage dealt to your Mace after attacking something with it. This enchantment can go up to level three.

Mending
Mending enchantments ensure the Mace durability is repaired when you collect experience points. This enchantment only has one level.

Curse of Vanishing
The Curse of Vanishing enchantment sees that your Mace disappears upon death, making it impossible for anything else to pick it up.

Fire Aspect
A Fire Aspect enchantment sets enemies on fire when hit. This enchantment can go up to level two.

Breach
The Breach enchantment is unique to the Mace, allowing you to ignore enemy armor defenses when attacking with it. Breach goes up to level four and reduces an enemy’s armor effectiveness by 15% per level.

Wind Burst
The Wind Burst enchantment is another unique feature of this new weapon. It goes up to level three and launches you up in the air every time you use a smash attack. This allows you to take advantage of multiple smash attacks at once.

Smite
Smite allows the Mace to do more damage to undead mobs. It goes up to level five.

Density
Density is the last unique enchantment for the Mace. It increases smash attack damage for every block fallen by 0.5 per enchantment level. This enchantment goes up to level five, meaning it can be pretty effective if you plan correctly.

Bane of Arthropods
This enchantment increases the damage dealt to Arthropods, otherwise known as bug-like creatures such as Spiders. It goes up to level five.

Note: Some of these enchantments, such as Density or Smite, are mutually exclusive. This is so you can’t have a ridiculously powerful Mace that one shots all mobs.
How To Craft A Mace In Minecraft
The Mace requires two key ingredients: a Heavy Core and a Breeze Rod.
Heavy Core
The Heavy Core is a recent item added in the game’s newest update. If you don’t want to go into Creative Mode to find one, you’ll have to take on one of Minecraft’s trial chambers instead.

Trial chambers are combat-focused obstacle courses that challenge you to master Minecraft’s mechanics. They involve claustrophobic fights with mobs such as the Breeze but offer up incredible loot as a reward.

One such reward is the Heavy Core, which may or may not spawn in an Ominous Vault after beating a trial chamber. Ominous Vaults are the reward area after winning a trial chamber.
Breeze Rod
The Breeze is a new enemy that only appears in trial chambers. These chambers include a ton of monster spawners, with the Breeze spawner being one of them.
A windy counterpart to the Blaze, you must defeat a Breeze to acquire the Breeze Rod. Fortunately, a Breeze Rod will drop every time you defeat a Breeze, meaning you don’t need to grind them to craft a Mace.

You can also use Breeze Rods to repair a Mace at an Anvil.
Once you’ve acquired both item types, it’s time to combine them via Crafting Table. Organize the two items as follows:

Now that you know everything there is to know about the Mace, why not try crafting one with your friends and trying to do the highest smash attack together?
