If you find yourself starting to get deeper into Palworld, you may start asking yourself questions about one of the most precious resources – coal. This guide will cover where to find coal in Palworld, map’s common coal locations, how to farm coal, and what to do with coal.
What Is Coal In Palworld?
While it’s not as important in the early game, coal is one of the essential raw materials as you enter the mid to late game — specifically when it comes to refined ingots.
What Can I Make With Coal In Palworld?
Many of the tools and weapons you use in Palworld are made with ingots. The ingot crafting recipe requires you to smelt two ore in a primitive furnace. For higher-level gear, you need an improved furnace to smelt refined ingots. This is where coal comes into play.
The refined ingot crafting recipe calls for two ore and two coal. Refined ingots are required for mid-tier weapons and tools, such as the refined metal pickaxe, so there’s no getting around this. After all, you’ll spend hundreds, if not thousands, of refined ingots as you play Palworld.
Note: Remember to save some of your ore for normal ingots, as they’re required for mid-level Pal spheres and other useful items.
Coal is mainly used for refined ingots, but refined ingots are in all sorts of crafting recipes as you move up the technology tree.
You need refined ingots for the double-barreled shotgun, the pump-action shotgun, rifle ammo, shotgun shells, upgraded production and sphere assembly lines — the list goes on.
How To Get Coal In Palworld
The fastest way to get coal in Palworld is to find coal deposits and mine them. You can find coal nodes in multiple areas around the map but you’ll usually discover coal nodes in warmer places like the desert, so make sure to have heat-resistant armor before going!
You can’t just mine coal with your hands, though. The mining process requires a pickaxe. A stone pickaxe works just fine, but leveled-up pickaxes, like the metal pickaxe or the refined metal pickaxe, will give you more coal per hit. A coal node usually generates 150 coal.
Keep in mind that coal is heavy, weighing about five pounds per unit.
You can sometimes buy coal from a wandering merchant or from visiting merchants in a town, and some Pals drop coal when you catch or defeat them.
Steps To Start Farming Coal In Palworld
Due to the amount of normal ingots required in the early game, it’s easy to ignore coal deposits in favor of ore nodes. However, it’s most efficient to have a stash of coal to build more powerful tools immediately when you reach the later game. While searching for and mining coal nodes is a fine way to acquire the asset, the fastest way to get coal in Palworld is to farm it.
1. Level up your base
To start a coal farming base in Palworld, you’ll need to level up your starting base to level ten. Once there, you’re able to build a new base in a second location.
Note: If you’ve already built your second base, don’t worry. You can keep leveling until you get a third base or re-establish your second base somewhere else.
2. Find coal locations
Once you’re able to build a new base, place eight wood, three stone, and one Paldium fragment in your inventory. Then, search for some coal locations around the map.
3. Establish a base near the coal nodes
Stand near the coal veins, bring up the Build menu, and select “Palbox.” Place the Palbox, and build a chest nearby.
4. Deploy mining and transport Pals
You’ll need mining and transport Pals to run your coal farming base. You can tell which skills a Pal has by looking under their stats. A mining Pal will have a number near the pickaxe icon, while a transport Pal has a number next to the box icon.
While you can use Pals with a skill of one, picking Pals with a mining or transport skill of two or higher is more efficient. For example, Reptyro is a good mining Pal, and Mossanda is a good transport Pal.
When you deploy your pals, they will automatically mine the nodes while the gatherers store the raw materials in the chest.
The Twilight Dunes can be a bit dangerous, so make sure to build some defenses as well.
5. Build beds
Pals need rest, otherwise they get angry or stressed and won’t perform their tasks. Build some beds around the base as well — one per Pal.
6. Build farms and food storage
Finally, Pals need to eat. You’ll need to build farms and food storage and have Pals that plant, gather, water, and transport plants. Mossanda also have planting and transport abilities, so these Pals already cover half of the requirements.
Robinquill are good for gathering, and Penking can water, mine, and transport. While there are all sorts of Pal combinations for farming coal, we’ve found the combination of Reptyro, Mossanda, Robinquill, and Penking a great start.
