The warden is one of the most dangerous and imposing enemies you will find in Minecraft. After you have spent so much time trying to find the deep dark caves and come across an ancient city, Minecraft players will want to watch every step they take. If you are running in or step in the wrong spot, sculk sensors and shriekers will the area around you even more and could summon the big, bad warden right to you. Here is how to kill the warden in Minecraft.
How to find the warden in Minecraft
Before you can kill the warden, you need to find it. The interesting thing is, more often than not, it will find you. As you walk around the deep dark, you will notice sculk sensors and shrieker blocks. If you walk past these or step on them directly, the sculk shrieker will eventually try to spawn in a warden. When summoned, the warden will claw its way out of the nearby sculk blocks and begin looking for mobs to attack. Just the presence of anything will set this hulking creature into a rage.
How to prepare to fight the warden in Minecraft
Before you go looking to pick a fight with a warden, you need to be prepared. For the darkness effect that it puts on you, we recommend drinking a potion of night vision. Not only will this stop the darkness effect, but you will also be able to see around the deep dark much better. Torches and fires won’t be much help here.
The warden is a heavy hitter, so you will want to gather up the best armor you can. Full netherite armor is preferable, but diamond should be the bare minimum you have in all of your slots. Try to enchant each piece with Protection IV.
When it comes to weapons, we recommend using ranged attacks. Be sure to load up on a ton of arrows and enchant a bow with the best upgrades you can find. If you have a trident with Loyalty, it will continuously return to you after you throw it. Due to the warden’s debilitating melee attack, we don’t recommend fighting it head-on with a sword.
After you have your potions, armor, and weapons ready, be sure to load up on other items that can maintain your health. Totem of undying to prevent death, food to maintain hunger and health, and potion of healing and regeneration to regain health. If you can get a bunch of eggs to throw to distract or cobwebs to trap the warden in a small area, that would be helpful, too. Unfortunately, you can not burn or drown a warden, so lava and water won’t be any help to you.
If you have iron blocks and a pumpkin, you can create an iron golem to fight alongside you, but this hostile mob will make easy work of it in direct combat.
Warden abilities and things to look out for
Wardens are blind. However, while they can’t see you, they will hear you or smell you. Running, sprinting, jumping, hitting any block, placing blocks, or setting off a sculk shrieker will let the warden zero in on your position. Even if you stand completely still for a long time, the mob will eventually start sniffing the air and find you. When it finds a target, it roars and will try to chase them down.
If you want to avoid an altercation, try to sneak walk away. If you have wool blocks, you can create a bridge to walk on to mute your steps. Consider using a stack of blocks to build a tall tower to give you the height advantage, but make it very tall. Arrows and eggs can also be shot against blocks away from you to distract the warden in a different direction.
The warden’s main attack is a melee slam with its arms. This move is incredibly powerful and can do a ton of damage with a single hit. Do the best you can to keep your distance at all times and find a safe place to heal when you have a moment. Make sure you are far away from it because you can not outrun it.
Even if the warden can’t reach you, you’re not necessarily safe. If it can pinpoint your location but can’t hit you with its melee attack, it will let out a sonic boom attack that has a pretty far range. This attack doesn’t have the same damage dealt as the slam, but it can still take you out if you’re not paying attention.
Tips to kill the warden in Minecraft
By now, you should have a pretty good game plan for going in to kill a warden. Make sure you are overequipped to deal with anything. Load up on healing items, night vision potions, and ranged weapons to chip away its health. If you can get high ground, you might have an easier time dealing ranged attacks down on them, but remember to look out for its sonic boom attack and make sure it doesn’t knock you down from too high that you die from fall damage.
If you are finding things too tough, your best option may be to hide and wait out the warden. If the warden cannot detect entities and doesn’t attack any mobs around it for a whole minute, it will eventually dig itself away and despawn. However, any sound or smell of any mob, slime, zombies, and skeletons included will restart that timer and keep it rampaging. If it leaves, be sure to look out for any more sculk sensors and shrieker blocks to prevent it from coming back.
What does the warden drop upon death in Minecraft?
Unfortunately, the warden’s loot is quite disappointing for all of the work and effort you have to go through to bring it down. All it drops is some experience orbs and a sculk catalyst. The catalyst is a block that will try to transform blocks around it into other sculk blocks whenever a player or creature dies nearby. This is a good way to make various sculk blocks if you want them, but for the effort required to kill the warden, we would recommend looking for chests in an ancient city to find a sculk catalyst.
