What are Project Zomboid Traits?

So first off, what are the traits in Project Zomboid? Like in real life, traits are aspects of one’s personality that affect how one interacts with the world itself. In terms of the game, traits affect how your character will experience the world. From combat, health, endurance, and crafting, these are just some of the things that are impacted by your chosen traits.

Moreover, traits are divided into two categories as mentioned earlier. Positive traits cost points but have advantages. Some examples are the Athletic trait to be able to run faster but cost 10 points and the Fast Learner trait which allows you to recover faster but costs 6 points. Then for Negative traits, these have in-game effects and also cost points. There’s the Slow Reader trait which takes longer to read books for 2 points and Weak Stomach which gives you a higher chance of getting food poisoning for 3 points.

Most traits in Project Zomboid can be chosen during character creation. There are other traits you can also get depending on your chosen occupation. You can check out the full list of traits on the Project Zomboid Wiki as this database covers not only each trait and respective points but also descriptions of their in-game effects.

How do Project Zomboid Traits work?

When you start a playthrough in Project Zomboid, you’ll go into character creation which allows you to pick your occupation and traits. You can go Unemployed and simply choose whatever traits you want and get basic skills like Fitness and Strength.

The blank slate of trait choosing.

But if you choose a profession, you’ll get more skills and bonus traits added such as if you’re a Security Guard, you get the Night Owl trait alongside skills such as Sprinted and Lightfooted.

You’ll have points to spend during character creation. This is usually on a standard of eight points. You’ll have to spend these points on the traits you’ll want to add to your character. By the end of adding your traits, your point amount should equal to zero.

What are some of Project Zomboid’s Best Traits to Pick?

Positive traits can grant you a ton of benefits when starting in the game. This makes your survival more manageable and you can gain buffs that will make some things easier than others. Here are some of our recommendations on some of the best positive traits and negative traits you should have:

Positive Traits

Positive traits are denoted by their green text and minus sign to deduct points. You’ll be able to see the in-game descriptions when you hover your mouse on each trait.

Some of the Positive traits in Project Zomboid.

Athletic

The Athletic trait icon noted by its darker color.

The Athletic trait is a must-have. You get more Fitness, increased Running Speed, and even better Endurance. It’s a multi-faceted trait you should have. While this trait costs 10 points, it’s worth investing in.

Mainly, if you’re the type to escape zombies and survive on a long-term basis, this is a great trait to have. On the other hand, if you’re more of a fighter who’s ready to take down the undead, the trait is perfect if you want to do a lot of combat and running.

Brave

The Brave trait icon.

Panic is a monitored aspect of your character in Project Zomboid. It can affect your vision and reduce your Critical Chance and Knockback attempts. This is where Brave comes in which lowers your character’s panic, making it easier for you to stay calm in intense situations.

For four points, Brave gives you 30% panic except during night terrors and phobias. This is helpful if you’ll often fight zombies up close. Your capacity to manage your panic will certainly be helpful in the long run.

Fast Learner

The Fast Learner trait icon.

Next is Fast Learner. This gives you a huge XP boost for all your skills except Strength and Fitness. You’ll be able to easily level up your basic abilities like Foraging and Combat.

Costing six points, Fast Learner has a similar idea to the Athletic trait. This is great if you want to speed through learning a variety of skills quickly in-game, especially in the early stages.

Fit

The Fit trait icon noted by its lighter color.

Another good trait to have is Fit. You get additional Fitness that increases your stamina and reduces fatigue. Think of it as a cheaper alternative to Athletic.

It still gives you good physical boosts and it ensures that you’re always staying active without easily tiring out. This is much preferable if you’re not the type to get into a lot of combat but still want to have well-balanced traits.

Keen Hearing

The Keen Hearing trait icon.

Besides the overall physique-based traits, it’s good to also have specialized traits for more specific purposes. Keen Hearing gives you a better perception radius in-game. You’ll be able to easily detect zombies approaching from behind you or outside your field of view.

Having this trait is perfect if you’re the type to be jump-scared easily, want to avoid ambushes, or simply need more reaction time. This costs six points and it’s a somewhat underrated trait you should consider.

Lucky

The Lucky trait icon.

Then we have the Lucky trait. While this is a chance-based trait, it’s useful for a lot of surprising situations that you may happen to come across. Simply, your loot quality and chances of finding rare loot are increased with this trait. Moreover, there’s a reduction in chances for critical failures when you repair items.

Do keep in mind, however, that this trait isn’t available in the multiplayer mode of Project Zomboid. You can only use this when playing on your own. Despite that, it’s a decent trait for long-term survival.

Negative Traits

Negative traits are indicated by their red text and plus sign to add points.

Some of the Negative traits in Project Zomboid.

High Thirst

The High Thirst trait icon.

High Thirst is a good Negative trait to start with since it only uses up one point. You simply need more water than the average player in the game. This means you’ll have to look for what and drink it more frequently.

While you might think that looking for water in-game is difficult, it’s usually easy to find in the early stages of playing. You can even stockpile your water for future use.

Smoker

The Smoker trait icon.

A meta trait often taken by players is Smoker. This trait costs two points. Basically how it works is that your character will often experience stress which can only be reduced by smoking.

It’s quite easy to manage this trait since cigarettes are quite common in Project Zomboid. Just be sure to stock up on a good supply of cigarettes. This trait is an easy way to gain points without many disadvantages.

Slow Reader

The Slow Reader icon.

Another low-cost trait is Slow Reader. As in it what is stated, it makes your character take longer to read books. The penalty for this trait is minor as well when you speed up time while reading.

This trait is fairly easy to manage if you have the patience to read longer. You can even combine this with the Fast Learner trait to balance out the negative aspect of Slow Reader.

Short Sighted

The Short Sighted trait icon.

If you don’t mind a more narrow field of view, Short-Sighted is another trait you can consider getting. It doesn’t have much impact on the main gameplay of Project Zomboid.

You pretty much get a smaller foraging radius in Search Mode. However, this can be negated when you use glasses. This also costs two points.

Low Weight/ Underweight

The Low Weight or Underwait trait icon.

For Low Weight, this costs six points. You get low strength and low endurance, and you’re more prone to injury. You’ll have to eat more high-calorie foods to negate this trait.

Take note that this trait can give you a 10% chance to trip while running, sprinting, and even vaulting low fences, and even from lunging zombies. So, if you’re the type to not do much physical activities, this trait is good to have.

Weak Stomach

The Weak Stomach trait icon.

Lastly is Weak Stomach. This increases your chances of getting food illness in Project Zomboid. This happens though when you consume rotten food or poorly cooked food. Plus, your food illness can last longer.

However, if you ensure that you stick to fresh and properly cooked meals, you’ll be safe. This trait is also pretty easy to overcome. And it costs only three points.

Tips and Tricks to Choosing Traits in Project Zomboid

Choosing the right traits that fit with your playing style is essential to maximizing your experience in Project Zomboid and it increases your chances to survive. In the cases of life and death, your traits help determine how you handle various problems that will challenge you while playing.

So, when you choose your traits, think of the things that matter to you such as how you want to deal with zombies, how you’ll handle food, and even learning skills. Tailor your traits to get the most out of your character.

Ultimately, it still boils down to your preferences on what traits you’ll choose in Project Zomboid. Think of the benefits and the disadvantages that you may have to face. By understanding how each trait affects your life in the game, you’ll be able to choose the traits that fit with both your personality and survival skills. But still, enjoy the experience and experiment with all the traits Project Zomboid has to offer to you.
