Minecraft Live 2021 brought a new exciting way for fans and players to contribute towards the game. The Minecraft developers introduced the mob vote, which allowed fans to vote for the mob they wanted to be added toy future Minecraft updates.
The Copper Golem, alongside the Glare and Allay, was the third mob introduced in the Minecon Live 2021 Mob Vote. In the first round of voting, the Glare was eliminated from the contest with the fewest votes. The final round of voting saw a close battle, but the Copper Golem eventually lost with 45.7% of the votes.
In the end, Allays were added into Minecraft in the 1.19 The Wild Update. This led to many disappointed fans who voted for the Copper Golem to win. If the Copper Golem had won, what would it have been able to do? This blog explores the full history of the copper golem and its intended features.
Copper Golem
The Copper Golem is a very short, statue-like mob that would have been built out of copper blocks and a pumpkin. Unlike its tall counterpart, the Iron Golem, the Copper Golem would have been very short and half the size of a player. They have a distinctive lightning rod on their head, signaling that it is able to absorb lightning; however, the full function of the lightning rod is unknown.
According to online sources, to create a Copper Golem, a player will need to place a carved pumpkin on top of one copper block and a lightning rod on top of the carved pumpkin. Then, the lightning rod must be struck by lightning to bring the Copper Golem to life. You cannot breed or spawn a Copper Golem naturally without these resources.

Copper Golems’ Behavior
Copper Golems are neutral mobs that don’t attack players or mobs. They tend to be peaceful and don’t really interact with other mob entities. Unless they are attacked, they will have no reaction to mobs in their proximity.
The main feature of a Copper Golem is its simple autonomous behavior of pressing copper buttons. Copper Golems would randomly press any copper button that is near them. If the Copper Golem had won the mob vote, copper buttons would have also been added to the game along with the Copper Golem.

Copper Golems have a 6% chance of pressing a copper button for every second of in-game time when they encounter them. Their button pressing behavior could also be accelerated when they are struck by lightning, meaning they start pressing buttons at a faster pace.
Because of their ability to press copper buttons, players thought that the Copper Golems would have been very useful when it came to redstone contraptions. With the randomness of the Copper Golem button pressing behavior, players could have created redstone machines that are based off of the percent chance that a Copper Golem would press the buttons.
Copper Golem and Weather
Oxidation

Copper Golems were also intended to be afraid of water. A Copper Golem’s copper-like structure will start oxidizing upon contact with water, turning green. If a Copper Golem were to fully oxidize, it would have turned into a statue and be unable to move. To avoid this, Copper Golems have the natural reaction to flee from any type of water to preserve its copper form. The oxidation can be removed with either an axe or if the Copper Golem gets struck by lightning.
Concerns
Because of their behavior of running away from water, players believed that Copper Golems would be useless when it came to weather conditions like rain. This concern may have decreased the Copper Golem’s vote count during the mob vote.
Copper Golems were suspected to be somewhat useful during thunderstorms due to the lightning rod on the top of their head. While the function of the lightning rod is unknown, some speculate that it could have been useful for redstone contraptions. However, players were concerned with the fire hazard that could come with the Copper Golem’s ability to absorb lightning and supported adding a safeguard against this issue.
Copper Golem’s Future
Will the Copper Golem Come Back?
It’s hard to say whether the Copper Golem will ever be added into Minecraft. So far, the chances of it becoming a real mob are highly unlikely. Throughout the past mob votes, none of the mobs that lost have ever appeared back into the vote or added to the game. However, the chances are never zero, so if you are looking forward to the Copper Golem, there is still some hope.
