We’re often asked how we stack up against our competitors.
I completely understand this, as I personally do a lot of research before I purchase nearly anything.
Like most people, I like to read reviews, look at social media, and dig up as much information as I can get to make sure I’m making the best decision for my business.
I’ve decided to write some comparisons here on our blog, without being too biased, so potential customers can complete their research and make their own decisions.
For this one, I’m going to compare a HostGator’s Reseller to NameHero’s Reseller packages:
HostGator Reseller Packages
Package | Storage | Bandwidth | Domains | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|
Aluminum | 60GB Disk | 600GB | Unlimited | $19.95/mo* | Copper | 90GB Disk | 900GB | Unlimited | $24.95/mo* | Silver | 150GB Disk | 1400GB | Unlimited | $24.95/mo* |
* It’s important to note, I’m going off the “best deal” price meaning it’s for 36-months. I also haven’t made a typo, both the Copper and Silver are the same price (assuming it’s some type of promo, but why wouldn’t you go with Silver).
NameHero Reseller Packages
Package | Storage | Bandwidth | Domains | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|
Startup | 50GB SSD | 500GB | Unlimited | $9.95/mo* | Entrepreneur | 75GB SSD | 2000GB | Unlimited | $14.95/mo* | Corporate | 100GB SSD | 2000GB | Unlimited | $39.95/mo* |
As you can see, we’re pretty close in terms of pricing, but we’re a bit higher on the storage. Unlike HostGator we use Solid State Drives (SSD) for storage, meaning they have a faster I/O. HostGator uses traditional hard drives which have moving parts and aren’t as fast. It’s more expensive to build servers using SSDs, therefore we have to charge a bit more for space.
Technical Comparison
Reselling web hosting is certainly a lot more than just giving your customers disk space and bandwidth. With the popularity of mobile devices and Google’s ever-changing algorithm, I can promise you that your customers want their websites as fast as possible. That’s why it’s important to look at the technical specs:
Company | Storage | Web Server | Cloud Based | Database | Backups |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
HostGator | SATA | Apache | No | mySQL | Weekly | NameHero | SSD Raid 10 | LiteSpeed | Yes | MariaDB | Nightly |
If you’re a frequent reader of our blog, you already know how important it is to me to offer fast web hosting. That was one of my main reasons behind starting NameHero; to offer a high-speed shared/reseller hosting platform for websites of all sizes.
Research and speed tests have concluded servers are much faster using SSD drives with LiteSpeed/MariaDB over traditional SATA disks with Apache/mySQL.
All of our shared and reseller accounts have also been built on our own private cloud. This allows us to allocate each cPanel account its own amount of resources creating a much more redundant and reliable network. We’re also very open about these type of limits.
I did check with HostGator and according to the representative I chatted with, they offer Cloud hosting, but it’s not for Resellers. They also stated WHMCS (popular billing software for resellers) wouldn’t function on their cloud.
Feature Comparison
Have you ever been to a car dealership to only realize the price for the car you wanted was the bare-bones, stripped down model? It has a Mercedes emblem… but that’s about it!
Because of this, I feel it’s very important to provide our Resellers with all the “tools” they’ll need to service their customers. I feel like including everything vs. offering a bunch of upsells provides a better ordering experience and allows me to train our support staff on our standard features.
Company | Free SSL | WHM | Cloudflare | WHMCS | Private NS |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
HostGator | No | Yes | No | Yes | Yes | NameHero | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Since we both offer cPanel, many of the popular features such as the one-click WordPress installation is included on both. One big feature I didn’t list was we also allow for multiple PHP versions to be selected from inside of cPanel. I believe with HostGator you still have to create an “old school” php.ini file (these are such a pain in the butt).
Customer Service/Support
The final piece of the Reseller account [and the most important in my opinion] is customer service and technical support.
Company | Live Chat | Tickets | Phone |
---|---|---|---|
HostGator | Yes | 24-48 Hours | Yes | NameHero | Yes | 15 Min | Yes |
There is ABSOLUTELY nothing more annoying than having a problem with a customer’s website and not being able to get help. That’s why we strive to answer all tickets within 15 minutes and provide 24x7x365 coverage along with phone and live chat support.
Through a live chat with a HostGator representative, they confirmed to me I would expect to wait 24-48 hours for my tickets to be answered:
Me: What is the average response time to a support ticket?
Erik H (HostGator Sales): 24/48 hrs
When asked why so long, he told me I could rely on their Live Chat or Telephone support better:
Me: So 24 – 48 hour response time for a ticket?
Erik H (HostGator Sales): Yes but if you chat in ussualy same call solution
Erik H (HostGator Sales): If you chat in or call in it will be same chat or call solved
Personally, I hate to live chat or call with a tech problem. I like to spell it all out in an email (or ticket) and then receive a reply once its been fixed. I don’t want to sit around and wait on an awkward phone call for my issue to be resolved. But that’s just me.
My team members know when we hire, no ticket is to sit longer than 15 minutes. That’s why I feel it’s very important to publish our ticket feedback each month.
