How To Enable Object Caching On Your Website

Unlike other hosting providers, NameHero offers object caching on your website for free. This is due to our use of the LiteSpeed web server, and the LiteSpeed caching plugin. Other hosts typically utilize Apache, which doesn’t have such functionality out of the box. As a result, the object caching is an additional module that you need to pay for. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to enable object caching on your NameHero account.

Here’s a list of our NameHero web hosting plans – all of them have object caching included at no charge!

What is Object Caching? – A Quick Primer

Object caching is a specific type of caching, that’s distinct from the static caching done by your CDN. Nor is it the caching of dynamic HTML pages, which is done either via the server, or through a plugin. Incidentally, NameHero also provides free server-based caching – something that no other web host on the market offers.

Object-based caching on the other hand, refers to the storage of database results, so that the system doesn’t have to process the same queries over and over again. This is particularly useful for database heavy applications like WordPress. By storing the datasets of frequently used queries, your site immediately speeds up because of the reduced server load.

Unlike with Apache, you can configure the LiteSpeed web server to enable object caching via the LiteSpeed caching plugin for WordPress. Since NameHero uses LiteSpeed, this functionality is available to everyone by default.

LiteSpeed is a “drop-in” replacement for Apache and comes with a whole lot of additional features. It’s proven to be fast, stable, and a good alternative to Apache if you know what you’re doing:).

How to Enable Object Caching on LiteSpeed

If you’d like to watch a video instead of a written tutorial, you can follow along as Ryan explains the basics of object caching and how to enable it on NameHero:

Here’s the written guide.

Step 1: Install the LiteSpeed Caching Plugin. Turn on Advanced Options

Download and install LiteSpeed cache from the WordPress plugin repository. Once you’ve activated the plugin, go to its settings and turn on the “Advanced Options” as shown here:

Advanced Options in LiteSpeed Cache

This will open up a whole new set of tabs. Go to the one labeled “Advanced” as shown here:

Advanced Tab in LiteSpeed Cache

Now the “Object Caching” section as the first section. Unfortunately, you’ll most likely see that the “Memcached” and “Redis” statuses are disabled as shown here:

Memcached and Redis disabled

To fix this, we need to enable the requisite modules from cPanel.

Step 2: Enabling the Memcached and Redis Modules on cPanel

Log into NameHero and go to your cPanel. Find and click the icon labeled “Select PHP Version”:

Select PHP Version in cPanel

In the following screen, enable either the “memcached” or the “redis” modules as shown here:

Enable memcached or redis

Save your changes.

Step 3: Enable Either Memcached or Redis from the Plugin

Now when you go back to the LiteSpeed plugin, you should see that the modules are enabled.

Memcached and Redis Enabled

Enable the one you want, save your changes and you’re done! There are a lot of other options in the LiteSpeed advanced section – and as the label says, you need to be very careful while messing around with these if you don’t know what you’re doing. Personally, I prefer to leave most of it alone unless there’s a specific problem that needs fixing.

Enabling object caching on your website should provide a noticeable speed boost as your server no longer has to waste time executing expensive queries. Not only that, it also frees up your quotas and enables you to serve more visitors as lesser cost! What’s not to like?
