Can You Still Make Money With Reseller Hosting In 2019?

I was recently asked by a potential client if Reselling Web Hosting is still as lucrative as I’ve posted about previously.

This is a very interesting question as two years ago almost to this day, I published another article on Where I See The Web Hosting Industry In Five Years.

Given we’re ~50% past this original post, I felt it was a great time to publish my thoughts for 2019.

Web Hosting Search Trends

To get started, I think it’s important to analyze data from Google Trends:

Google Searches For Web Hosting Over The Last 5 Years
Google Searches For Web Hosting Over The Last 5 Years

This shows the trend of users that have searched for the term Web Hosting in Google over the last 5 years.

As you can easily notice, the trend was downward, spiked in 2015, and then has decreased since.

But if you recall from my post in 2017, the trend from all Google data still remains down:

Google Searches For Web Hosting Since 2014

If I get more specific with my search, I notice a bit different trend:

Google Searches For WordPress Hosting Over The Last 5 Years
Google Searches For WordPress Hosting Over The Last 5 Years

This data shows searches for WordPress Hosting over the last 5 years.

You can see, for the most part, the trend has remained fairly steady.

But if you look at a longer time period you’ll notice:

Google Searches For WordPress Hosting Since 2014

Is Web Hosting Dying?

If you just look at the Google trend for web hosting it looks like it’s a dying industry.

So does this mean everyone decided to quit making websites and go back to paper print?

That would be an ignorant statement!

Let’s do a quick exercise; pull out your smartphone (I know you have one).

Open up Google in your favorite web browser and search for the following phrases (adding your city to the query):

  • Pediatricians Kansas City
  • Best Dentist In Kansas City
  • Lawyers In Kansas City
  • Hamburger Restaurant Kansas City
  • Plumber Kansas City
  • HVAC Repair Kansas City
  • Methodist Church Kansas City
  • Gyms In Kansas City
  • Kansas City Daycares

How many small-business websites have you pulled up so far?

Sure, you’re going to get Google’s listings, some of the big Yelp/Home Advisor websites, but if you look through those you’re going to notice the majority of businesses you find also have a website attached to them.

Now multiple this by every city in the United States and think about that number.

Next, consider this is every country; that’s a lot of websites!

So Where Are All The Searches?

This is a fair question.

If we know businesses around the globe are still using websites, what are business owners searching for to get these services?

Look at the trends of digital marketing:

Google Trends For Digital Marketing Since 2014

How about social media management:

Google Trends For Social Media Management Since 2014

These are two very broad search terms, but they give us a good idea what small-business are looking for.

I think it’s safe to assume that every small-business owner knows that a website is just as big of a requirement now as a phone number perhaps even more so.

Knowing that, business owners are looking for more!

Small business owners that I know typically have a “web guy/gal” they work with to handle all of their online stuff.

Websites were the “thing” in the early 2000s but in 2019, business owners not only need a website but they need a presence on social media as well as a complete digital marketing strategy.

Having a website the bare minimum to survive in today’s world. Business looking to succeed need much more!

The Rise Of Social Media

While we’re on the topic of social media, this is also very important to mention.

Google is no longer the only resource out there that small businesses are using to get their information.

The majority of people that I know have a Facebook profile. This includes doctors, lawyers, and small business owners!

While a lot of Facebook news feeds are filled with pictures of vacations, food, and other day-to-day life happenings, they’re also filled with people sharing their experience with products and services.

Additionally, many people are getting their daily news from this feed! I personally learned of the Notre-Dame fire by checking Facebook early the other morning; everyone was posting about it!

Aside from all of this, people like to read, share, and comment on content that find beneficial.

For example, if someone shares a piece of content on how to create their website, someone else interested in the same topic, is likely to read/interact with it as well.

It’s human nature to like what our friends like!

While Google searches are still beneficial, they lack the intimacy that viral content on social media brings.

Let’s think about one more example.

I’m the Founder & CEO of a web hosting company. My Facebook newsfeed is primarily full of family and friends (sorry I don’t add work acquaintances to my personal profile).

However, I am a member of a number of different Facebook groups that deal with WordPress development and other online business resources.

This way, I can interact with others in the industry, get suggestions, and also see the tools they recommend.

Therefore if I’m looking for a solid WordPress developer, I’ll probably ask an appropriate Facebook group before doing a Google Search. It’s much more personal!

Are the wheels turning in your head yet?

Making Money With Reseller Hosting

Back to the question at hand, Can You Still Make Money With Reseller Hosting?

Absolutely! The time has never been better!

People now more than ever need the services you can offer; but that’s not the only thing they want.

If you’re an established web host within the business, it’s likely your brand is already well-known amongst many developers, webmasters, and others needing your services.

But if you’re just now getting your start you have to think a bit more outside of the box.

I’m currently working on a lengthy tutorial on how to create a Digital Marketing Agency with WordPress and WHMCS.

In this tutorial, I’m going to show exactly how to build a professional looking agency website and how to integrate it with WHMCS to bill and setup your customers.

Do you know how much a single doctor’s office would pay if you’re willing to develop/re-develop their website, setup/manage their social media profiles, and provide the web hosting?

Some of our most successful Reseller Hosting customers tell me amazing stories how they got creative, entered a niche, and became an industry leader. What’s stopping you?

The Web Hosting Industry Is Changing

The web hosting industry is not dying, it’s just changing.

It’s been changing ever since the first website came online.

As long as there is an Internet, there is going to be a need for web hosting.

When Facebook added Business Pages, some said that would kill off websites as we know them.

I challenge you to search Facebook for ten different local businesses and count how many don’t have a website attached to them.

While I believe a Business Facebook page is also very important, it’s not the only asset a business leverages in their overall digital marketing strategy.

What company would want to put all their eggs in Mark Zuckerberg’s basket?

If you are to have a complete and effective digital marketing strategy, wouldn’t you want to use every resource at your disposal?

Reseller Hosting gives you the ability to be able to offer web hosting as one of your many services to your clients.

Working alongside NameHero, you don’t have to handle all the technical setup/network optimization, but can instead focus on building your client base and ensuring their online goals are being met.

We look forward to being your partner in business!
