For the last seven years, I’ve coached and trained thousands of affiliate marketers, from all around the globe.
The most common question – How long until I have my first $100,000 month?
Being the most common, it’s by far the hardest to answer.
Across social media there is a viral image that shows that you’re entitled to in this world and it’s a blank notepad:
I feel like this sums up affiliate marketing or any business for that matter.
From my experience, most beginner affiliates give up before they give it a fair shot.
How Long It Took Me
I ran online businesses for 10 years before I got involved in buying paid traffic and sending it to affiliate offers. While looking to add an additional revenue stream to my companies, I decided I was going to start promoting other products.
I personally liked the idea of making a commission for each sale generated without having to handle customer support, shipping products, etc. With my other businesses, I simply didn’t have time to do all of that!
While moving into our new office this year, I found my old Windows computer with my stats spreadsheet sitting on the desktop. It was quite nostalgic reflecting back on how I’ve grown my companies since then, but I decided it would be inspiring to share my journey:
Most People Are Quick To Give Up
As you can see, the first four months of 2009 weren’t that glamorous. Let’s not forget I was also working on campaigns back in 2008 adding several more weeks of lackluster results.
I realized I would only fail at this venture if I stopped, therefore no matter how bad each month was, I got back up and kept on going until I found the success I was looking for.
From my experience, most people quit within the first six months of a new business (if not sooner). They’re almost always the hardest and most challenging.
The first 6 months after starting NameHero (or any of my other businesses) weren’t all that glamorous either. Any business venture has to been looked at like a marathon not a sprint.
Affiliate Marketing Is Scalable
Unlike traditional businesses, affiliate marketing is quickly scalable. As in my example above, once I had a couple campaigns working, I was able to simply buy more traffic and exponentially scale my income.
This has both advantages and disadvantages. Just as quick as the income multiplies, it can also disappear. I’ve always called this the “one step forward, two steps backwards” phenomena with affiliate marketing.
My income for September 2009 is living proof of that:
As you can see, my ROI was much lower, but that’s the nature of affiliate marketing. Some months are awesome, some are good, some are bad, and others are fair. You have to look at it on an annual basis.
Focus Long Term From The Start
From my experience coaching people, this is one of the hardest parts. They want that $100,000 profit month tomorrow. Most are ready to cut every corner humanly possible to get there. Unfortunately that’s going to do nothing but get you into trouble.
Getting started, you should be thinking about building an asset even if you plan on promoting affiliate offers. For example, if you’re wanting to promote weight-loss products, you should be creating a funnel (complete with a website, email capture, etc.) to filter your traffic before going to the offer.
It pains me to see affiliates just setup a simple landing page, out to an offer, never to see that traffic again. Once you hit those $100K+ months, you want to keep them around for as long as possible. Without building some type of asset, your income is too reliant on factors you cannot control.
