We blogged last week about former Hewlett-Packard CEO and Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina being burned by failing to register the “.org” domain of her name. Fiorina has taken a beating due to the blunder but seems to be handling it well.
Florina appeared on “Late Night with Seth Myers” and “Meet the Press” with Chuck Todd and after taking criticism from them about the blunder, she surprised them with some registrations of her own. Check them out at SethMyers.org and ChuckTodd.org, both of which now redirect to CarlyForPresident.com.
The morale of this story is the same. Register the domains associated with your name if you want protection. However, before you criticize someone for making the mistake, make sure you are not vulnerable yourself.
Given the number of TLDs being released and .SUCKS getting closer and closer to General Registration, it’s going to be almost impossible to stop third parties from registering domains meant to invoke criticism. The key is to do your research and secure domains that you feel are needed to protect your brand and your image.
